Critic dismayed with flow turn out
BY JOANNE BUCHANAN
The Theatre Circle production of The
Vaudevillians was performed on the Blyth
stage .last Thursday, Friday and Saturday
evening. I attended Friday evening's
performance and was dismayed to see such
a small audience present. True, it was ,Good
Friday and there was an NHL playoff game
on television. But I'll bet that a lot of the
people who stayed away from The
Vaudevilllians are the same ones who
constantly moan that there is "nothing to
do" around here.
The Theatre Circle was developed this
year by Keith Roulston. It is designed to
bring live theatre to area audiences during
the off-season and it needs and deserves
your support, especially in itsuifancy.
Suffice to say that it was your loss if you
missed The Vaudevillians. To the credit of
the actors, they performed as if there was a
full house present, giving it their all withsongs, dance and comedy routines.
The Vaudevillians was developed from an
original script by Peter Colley by Colley and
Heiner Piller with music arranged and
composed by David Warrack. It brings back
to life the old-time music, routines and
corny jokes of vaudeville.
Anthony Schatzky, Jayne Smiley and
James Fagan Tait play Harry, Estelle and
Phil, three old performers looking back on
the days when vaudeville was in its prime.
include familiar tuneslike 'Keep the
Homefires Burning' and `Making Whoopee'
and originals like 'The Great Days of
Vaudeville' and 'Entertain'.
Along with the songsand a little soft shoe,
The Vaudevillians. also features skits like
'Dr. Kronkheit and His Only Living Patient',
a take -off on Groucho Marx routines, and
the famous Abbott and Costello sketch,
'Who's On First'.
Tile Vaudevillians gives the audience H
sense of history. It takes us from the
carefree early days of Vaudville with funny
songs like 'The Spaniard That Blighted My
Life' and 'Captain Squarejaw of The
Mounties' to the seriousness of World War I
with a 'World War I Medley' and the
Depression era with 'Mr. Rockefeller' and
'Once I Built A Railroad' to the final demise
of vaudeville with the death of Phil and
`Funnyman's Exit'.
The actors in The Vaudevillians, like the
original stars of vaudeville, had to display a
lot of versatility in their roles. Although
each one had individual numbers, the total
performance came off as an ensemble effort
to the credit of director Stephen.Coopman•
Not to be overlooked is Rick Maltese,
musical director and talented piano
accompanist for the show.
Costume mistress Kerry Hackett is to be
congratulated, especially for the 'trick'
Mountie uniform worn in one sketch. Wendy
Ball's set design is simple and effective.
Vaudeville died with the advent of
television and ironically, it may have been
this same device which kept people away
from The Vaudevillians this past weekend I
hope the .pr-oduction gets the larger
audiences it deserves when it goes on the
road to Chatham, Petrolia and Owen Sound.
Li.rie of Fire under fire as just hard rock
By Janet Tench
How do I say this? Line of Fire is an
album of hard rock, but that's all. The two
releases "Celebration" and "JUST ONE
MORE TIME" died fast. The music is good,
(the Chilliwack sound is more distinct) yet it
is drowned out by Darby Mills' vocals,
which are like gravel so much so that the
words are inaudible.
Of course, I've got a hatred for Darby
Mills. She's got to be the ugliest woman in
rock .(and you thought Tina Turner was
bad! ), not to mention that everytime I hear
her voice on the record I say to myself,
"That poor cat. I hate it when someone pulls
a -cat's tail!"
The nice thing about this band is that
