'Early Fes: Clinton boasts child playwright
5 years age
Aprl 20, 1979
A high school newspaper conference held,
in Clinton last weekend and billed as On-
tario's first of its kind, was declared a total
success.
The Ausable-Ba field Conservation
Authority will plant 124,497 trees this year in
its Reforestation Assistance Program.
Don Noble, from Blyth, an installer -
repairman for Bell Canada was recently
presented with a letter of commendation,
signed by Bell's president Jirn Thackray.
The letter was given in recognition of Mr.
Noble's actions in saving two children from
a burning house in Vanastra last year.

Postal delivery service in the area was
spotty during the week as some post offices
were sorting mail and delivering it and
others, like Clinton were shut down when the
inside workers walked out. Service in Clin-
ton was restored Wednesday, but no settle-
ment has been reached in the national
strike.
The Clinton Police got down to the bare
facts last Saturday night when they ap-
prehended an area young man who streaked
across the main intersection of Clinton.

Out at the Grant Stirling Farm, about
seven miles west of here ... they found a
large U.S. weather balloon on April 12 ... Ap-
parently it was loosed on the American side
of Lake Huron some time that morning ... it
was red plastic with a box inside about 10 x
12" with 4 Flint post office address attached
... The Stirlings have availed this to Flint,
but have not yet had any reply.
Fifty-six years old, the Bank of Montreal
building at the corner of Ontario and Vic-
toria Streets (Highway 4 and 8), will be raz-
ed to the ground this summer to make way
for a modern new bank building, W.L.
Morlock, manager, has received 'word from
the head office of the Bank of Montreal to
proceed to request the architects to draw up
completed plans for the new structure. It is
expected that this will be done within the
next six weeks.

Mrs. J.G. Rance -Mackinnon, according to
a Moncton, N.B. paper, presented some lit-
tle plays to a capacity audience in that city
recently. One of the plays, entitled The
Sleeping Beauty, was written by Miss Violet
Fremlin of Clinton. Miss Violet has written
quite a bit of verse, some of which has been
published in this and other newspapers. She
is only 13 years of age and, inay yet make a
name for herself as a writer.
Old Dad Winter seems to hate to leave us
this winter. If he were only as glad to go as
we are ta see him depart, all would. be well.
But, surely he has given his last kick this
week, with a couple of inches of snow and a
bitter winter wind on April 24. Still, we've
seen the ground white on May 24, so better
not be too sougine.

Council concerned with elevator
CLINTON - The type of elevator installed
at the town hall has caused some concern.
Clinton town council talked about the
elevator and potential problems at their
April f6 meeting.
Concerns have arisen regarding access to
the elevator. It works on a key lock system.
The elevator door resembles an ordinary
windowed -house door and opens with a key.
•
Councillor Jim Hunter told council that
Bayfield has a similar elevator in their
community centre and the key system has
- caused problems -there._Be-reported. that_oae__
lady was trapped upstairs, because the key
had been taken and she was unable to use.
the elevator. Keys have also been reportedly
lost at Bayfield.
Clerk Proctor said that he was concerned
about this and particularly wondered if
someone would always have to be at the
town hall to make the elevator key available
during off -business hours. He noted that the
architect is looking into the situtation to
determine if the elevator can be alternately
wired to avoid problems with keys, or lack
of such.
Mayor Archibald also noted that potential
difficulties with the elevator concerned him.
He explained, "They assumed that we knew
about key lock elevators, but we didn't."
Council did learn some good news about
the town hall project. Their community
centre grant application from the ministry
of tourism and recreation has been
approved. This grant will provide $106,393
towards the completion of the town hall
-second-story-auditorium. --
However, with the good news came some
bad news. Mayor Archibald said that
original cost estimates on completion of the
second floor will be higher than expected.
The initial cost estimate was set at $150,000.
It now appears that the total cost may reach
$175,000. The provincially funded
community centre grant will finance 60 per
cent of this. Council also hopes to receive a
federal grant.
from the 10 weeks' training the Normal
School students will receive at the Ontario
Agricultural College at Guelph. To come in
contact with the practical side offarm life
should be a decided advantage to the com-
ing birth wilders, especially
n rural
rs of
schools, who have so many privileges
leaving their impress upon the youth of this
province. If more of the boys and girls could
taken to the Experimental Farm at
Guelph for an occasional holiday a still
greater good would be attained.
Mr. W. Oliver, of Staffa, who is connected
to Mrs. W.C. Searle and Jno. McC7acharty,
of town, had the misfortune to get a bone
broken in one foot by a horse stepping on it.
We hope he will be O.K.

On Saturday last, when the afternoon
train came from Goderich a man got off at
the station here, whose appearance in-
dicated that he had some loathsome
disease; some alleging that it was small-
pox. As the man was on his way to London,
Mr. Pattisondeemed it best to call in a
medical man and have him examined
before he proceeded south on the train,
which was accordingly done, the opinion be-
ing expressed that there was no fear of con-
tagion at all. When conductor Bailey saw the
man, he objected to taking him, but after
considerable persuasion, he was prevailed
to take him, the man being placed in one end
of the baggage cars and locked therein.
