Pro -Lifers mark 10th year
WINGHAM - Plans are now finalized for
the annual dinner, to be held at the
Presbyterian church in Wingham, on May
2. This will also mark the 10th anniversary
of Wingham's Voice for Life. The
Presbyterian church's double trio and the
Sacred Heart Folk Choir will sing at the
dinner. The guest speaker will be Dr. Hart
Bezner, a professor at Sir Wilfrid Laurier
University. Tickets will be available from
members of the Voice for Life board;
everyone is welcome.
The London Right to Life annual dinner
was held. in London on April 13. Twenty-
two Voice for Life members plan to attend
to hear guest speaker, Joe Borowski, who
is currently challenging Canada's abortion
laws.
In February the film, Assignment: Life,
was shown on CKNX television and wa
well received. Presently the slide presen-
tation,. Abortion: How It Is, is being used
by a local high school, as are the McGoey
films, which deal with family life and sex
education. A fetal model display is also
available upon request.
The Pro -Life group is planning to have an
information booth again at the Brussels
Trade Fest. There will also be a garage sale
in July at the home of Harry Sjaarda.
The Annual Pro -Life walk to protest the
many abortions done at Victoria Hospital
will be held on May 27 at 2:30 p.m. in Lon-
don. The walk will proceed from Victoria
Park to Victoria Hospital... As many
Wingham Pro -Life members are planning
to take part, buses may be available.
Doctors oppose wealth Act
WINGHAM - Members of the Wingham
and District Hospital Board plan to meet
with local doctors in response to a request
from the president of the Winam Medical
Association that the board lobby Ottawa
against the new Canada Health Act.
After hearing the request in a report from
the medical staff last week, the board
offered to organize a seminar to find out
more about the Act, which among other
things would prohibit extra -billing by
doctors and penalize provinces which,
employ health care user fees.
Using both a carrot and a stick, Dr. Walter
Wong told board members that whether
they realize it or not, the Act will affect
them, potentially cutting into the hospital's
revenue from chronic care user fees and
increasing its costs.
He challenged the board to study the
legislation and see "the true idiocy now
being planned for you."
OMB decision paves way
WINGHAM - A recent' decision by the
Ontario Municipal Board paves the way for
a Christian high school to be built in East
Wawanosh Township.
The decision was received by East
Wawanosh Clerk -Treasurer Winona
Thompson on March 26 and it settles a
matter which has been hanging over the
heads of the residents of Hutton Heights,
council and representatives from the
Wingham and District Interdominational
Christian High School Society for more than
six months.
Dr. John Vanderkooy of Harriston, a
society spokesman, said he and his group
are very pleased with the decision and they
definitely mtend.to go ahead with the school
as soon as the necessary funds can be
raised.
Council will deal with the issue at their
next meeting. -
