The his audience. of s West 'dltcl>110disappoint noble re p t in- troductory mi monologue, with the obligatory Newfie joke, was followed by 40 minutes of Crosbie -style Liberal bashing. Crosbie said the central issue facing the country is not language, nor the constitution nor the Liberal succession, but economic growth. He had dug back into the speeches and statements of Prime'Minister Trudeau and cabinet Members to compare p o mise with performance. Unemployn.,ent stood at five percent in 1960, it was seven and one- half percent four years ago with 9%7,000 jobless when Trudeau said he endorsed the right of every Canadian to a job, and has now risen to 1,476,000 persons out of work. Crosbie quoted finance minister Lalondes prediction. of 111 percent unemployment for the next two years to indicate little relief in the forseeable future. - Crosbie- drew a direct connection between the federal National Energy Policy and the recent announcement by Shell Oil, that 800 Ontario workers are- being laid 9ff and the oil company is moving its headquarters from Toronto to Calgary. "I wrnilel snnner have lots than a 12 per- cent increase in ownership by Petrocan," Crosbie remarked. Crosbie attacked the increasing rate of in- flation and the enormous budget deficits pil- ing up year by year. Since 1972, the deficit has grown to $101 billion, and now one in three tax dollars goes to service this debt, he said. In concluding, Crosbie answered press ac- cpsations of the Censervative'-s lack of policy by informing his audience that, "We have truckloads of policy; policy coming out our ears, but it wouldn't matter if we didn't have one shred of policy, not a single ounce...it would be better to vote for us...we have opposed all these things that have turn- ed out so disastrously." The partisan crowd gave him a standing ovation. Murray Cardiff, MP for the Huron -Brace riding, publicly announced he will be a can didate when nomhfations are held in the riding.
