Foursome return from trip
By Mary Chessell
VARNA - John Dowson, Scott Consitt,
Dale Stephenson and Mark Taylor returned
Thursday night from a vacation in the Bar-
bados. They hada good time, toured the
island, and took a cruise on the Jolly Roger.
The women of. the Varna 1JCW enjoyed
hearing -Joyce Dowson's amount of her holi
day iii. Jamaica at the April meeting on
Thursday night. She found some com-
parisons with Acapulco, where they were a
year ago, also major differenes. In
Acapulco, begging apparently wass an oc-
cupation for many women. In Jamaica, the
people had great quantities of goods to sell,
and were aggressive in their efforts to make
sales. Hand -carved canes, beautifully em-
broidered baskets of woven grass, strings of
beads made of coffee beans, seeds, etc. and
clothing and dress materials were offered in
great abundance. Women made sundresses
for them while they were on the coach trip
into the mountains.
In Jamaican money, $3.15 was equal to
one American dollar, and bought about the
same. The exchange rate is similar in Mex-
ico, but buys three times as much Mexican
goods. Jamaican currency is worthless out-
side of the country. Spanish, African and
English is mixed together in the .local
dialects. A fevy Great Houses, the home of
plantation slaves, are still there. One has
been the setting for several novels such as
The White Witch of Rose Hall. Illegal mari-
juana cultivation and use is a major pro-
blem for the government.
The major industry is tourism, followed
by sugar and bananas. Due to the poor
economy, some schools have been closed.
Lack of sanitation was noticeable. In spite of
the poverty, the residents appeared to be
happy and content. -
An exciting experience for Joyce was the
climb up 600 -foot Dunn's Falls.
Ruby Hill and Dorothy Ostrom were pro-
gram convenors and hostesses. The worship
theme was on the seasons and Easter. The
treasurer's report showed our financial
situation much improved from the pancake
supper, the dinner for the.; dairy farmers,
sponsored by Roth mills. and Shur -Gain, and
the two quilts done for Barbara Consitt.
Invitations Were -accepted from Bayfield
andGoshen UCW's. Rev. Barbara Laing is
the speaker at Bayfield's Thank -offering
meeting on April 18, and Jean Bennett will
speak at Goshen on Maundy Thursday, the
19th. Varna's dessert euchre is on Wednes-
day afternoon, the 18th.
A bale of clothing will be packed the latter
part of May at the church, so gather up the
things you no longer need when you're doing
your spring cleaning.
Miss Joanne Fairhart, a peace activist,
will speak at the Spring Event in Wingham
on April 23. Rev. Wilena Brown, an OPP of-
ficer and an MP will hold a panel discussion
at that meeting.

Here's how the dual -wave works: a
rotating antenna directs microwave
energy from the. top in a uniform
motion - and unlike other micro-
waves, energy is also distributed
from the bottom. Result: good', even
