The performers are strapping on their
dancing shoes and practising their scales as
rehearsals begin April 2 for The Theatre
Circle's next production, The Vaudevillians.
The Vaudevillians is a musical, heavy on
song and dance, recalling the musical and
comedy routines of the vaudeville days. For
director Steve Coopman, it means a new
challenge after his critically -acclaimed pro-
duction of The Shortest Distance Between
Two Points which opened The Theatre Cir-
cle's spring season. That show was a com-
edy and the staging was relatively straight
forward compared to the complicated
musical numbers and music -hall comedy
routines of The Vaudevillians. But Coopman
comes to the task with plenty of experience
in musical theatre, including directing
several operas.
For the-cast-oftwo men and one woman, it
means plenty of versatility, showing off
their skills as singers, dancers and come-
dians. Musical director Rick Maltese must
master the style of the old vaudeville music
that makes up much of the show and blend it
with the additional music composed by
Toronto composer David Warrack.

Designer Wendy. Ball has the task of
designing a theatre within a theatre. An old-
fashioned vaudeville stage, complete with
painted scenery, must be built by Associate
Producer Uwe Meyer to fit inside the
regular stages of the theatres .The Theatre
Circle will visit.
The Vaudevillians has been one of
Canada's most -produced small -cast
musicals since the original production by
internationally -popular Canadian
playwright Peter Colley (I'll Be Back
Before Midnight and Heads You Lose) was
first produced in London in 1977. Former
Theatre London Artistic Director Heinar
Piller helped rewrite the show for an eight-
month run in Toronto in 1979 with David
Warrack brought in to arrange the music
and compose additional music.
The Vaudevillians opens at Blyth
Memorial Hall in Blyth on April 19, 20 and 21
at11:30 p.m. it then moves, on to
auditorium, Owen Sound on April 25 to 29 at
8 p.m.; Chatham Cultural Centre, Chatham,
May 1, 3, 4 and 6 at 8 p.m. and Victoria
Playhouse, Petrolia May 8 to 12 at 8:30 p.m.
