The Vaudevillians is a musical, heavy on song and dance, recalling the musical and comedy routines of the vaudeville days. For director Steve Coopman, it means a new challenge after his critically -acclaimed pro- duction of The Shortest Distance Between Two Points which opened The Theatre Cir- cle's spring season. That show was a com- edy and the staging was relatively straight forward compared to the complicated musical numbers and music -hall comedy routines of The Vaudevillians. But Coopman comes to the task with plenty of experience in musical theatre, including directing several operas. For the-cast-oftwo men and one woman, it means plenty of versatility, showing off their skills as singers, dancers and come- dians. Musical director Rick Maltese must master the style of the old vaudeville music that makes up much of the show and blend it with the additional music composed by Toronto composer David Warrack. Former Theatre London Artistic Director Heinar Piller helped rewrite the show for an eight- month run in Toronto in 1979 with David Warrack brought in to arrange the music and compose additional music.
