th► tom" Groderi ch agd Exeter Student
Employment offices, The Exeter office is
not open full -tire yet, but once Ross gets an
assistant he'll be busy operating both
offices,
"There are about 400 employers in
Goderich and 1,000 in Huron County,"
explained Ross. His main job is to find the
employers to hire the students and he does
this by personally visiting each prospective
employer. "I've already visited 100
employers."
The Student Employment Centre is open
from January to September and serves
students of all ages.
"We don't get a lot of public school
students, but for those 10 -16 -years -old, we
usually get them jobs cutting grass or
painting," commented Ross.
For older students Ross finds jobs in
restaurants, inns, and factories. For the
college and university students the
government has special programs to help
the employers pay the student while the
student gets job experience related to their
studies.
Under the Summer Career Access
program, the governmentfunds 50 per cent
of the wages so the student can obtain job
experience. Ross's involvement is to make
sure the employer is giving the student the
work he saidh 'TT
Another program that the government has
is called the Student Venture Capital.
According to Ross this program is not as -
popular in this area as he feels it could be.
The way it works is the government
provides the student with a $2,000 interest
free loan so that the student can start a
business. The loan is to be repayed in
October.
"If the students have a good idea I don't
see why they. wouldn't take this
opportunity; 'commented Ross.
One of the most popular is the Ontario
Youth Employment program. The
government pays the employer $1.25 per
hour for each newly created job. It works on...
a first come, first serve basis until the funds
run out.
"This program has been running for three
or four years now and is very popular in this
area," Ross explained.
Last year the Goderich office placed 400
students in jobs and Ross ,already has 450
student registered this year. If students
need assistance finding jobs they should
drop into the Canada Employment Centre
for Students located above the post office.
Looking for a summer job? Goto the Canada Employinent Centre for Students on East
Street and Jim Ross, Supervisor, will do his best to assist the students. Ross is looking after
the Goderich andExeter offices anddhas received 450 applications from students searching
for jobs. (photo by Anne Narejko)
