:snada Council brant
Huron Country Playhouse has received
notification that it has been awarded a grant
of $12,000 by The Canada Council. This grant
will be used towards operating the new
studio theatre, PLAYHOUSE II, which
opened last summer and will be open once
again this year for three more Canadian
musicals.
The PLAYHOUSE II season has been
shortened for the 1984 season. Instead of
running throughout both July and August,
three shows will each be performed for
twelve performances, then will close.
Nevertheless, the quality of the productions
will remain the same high calibre that au-
diences have come to expect from Huron
Country Playhouse.
The three shows slated for PLAYHOL SE
Hare: Love in the Back Seat, Hilly Bishop
Goes to War and Once More! With Fooling!
Each of these shows is a different kind of
musical, ranging from the pop music of the
50s, 60s and 70a to ballads and rallying cries
of World War I to the nostalgic blues of the
30s and 40s. Altogether, it's a season that
will appeal to theatregoers of all ages and
all musical tastes
Subscriptions for the PLAYHOUSE II
season are now ' on sale at $20 for three
tickets ( one for each show) . These
subscriptions have only been on sale for a
few weeks and they are starting to move, so
reserve now and be assured of good seats in
the intimate PLAYHOUSE II studio.

on March 28 at 8 p.m. as part of the Blyth Festival's Spring Series.
The Nylons return to Playhouse
The incomparable Nylons will be return-
ing to Huron Country Playhouse in, July!
_ is an . . . un-.
This --.return . engagement
precedented step for HCP, but the combina-
tion of two sold -out concerts last season and
an almost unbelievable demand from
Playhouse audience members have resulted
in their coming back for, another sensational
show. .
The Nylons are unique! The quartet of
Marc Connors, Paul Cooper, Claude Mor-
rison arid Arnold Robinson sing a cappella,
that • is, with no musical accompaniment .
other than the rich, full-bodied sounds of
each other's voices.
In the spring of 1979, The Nylons emerged
.from the.Toronto.underground to.make.their _:_
professional debut.Since then, there has
been no stopping them. They have received
rave -reviews -for ..conceits:..in_Canada, .The..
United States, England, Germany, Belgium
and Holland, and have perforrried with sing-
ing stars such as Hall and Oates, The Beach
Boys, The Little River Band, The Pointer
Sisters and Shirley Hassey.
Their- first album, The Nylons, went. gold
ten weeks after its 1982 release. Their se-
cond album, One Size Fits All, surpassed the
first by going platinum in Canada, garner-
ing the equivalent of a Dutch Grammy
Award as International Chartbreaker of the
Year and was voted. Best Import Album by
the German critics. ,
Using voice and some percussive effects,
The Nylons future primitive sounds set at-
tendance records for three headline perfor-
mances in The Forum at Ontario Place.
And this summer, they will bereturning to.
_ Huron Country Playhouse where they will
receive a hearty welcome for a concert that

"Are you sitting comfortably?" asks a
female story -teller voice. "Then let's
begin:" So starts Platinum Blonde's album
Standing in the Dark. However, despite its
initial juvenile sound, the album is fresh
Canadian rock.
• The blonde trio (they're similar in this
aspect to the Police) have released a strong
debut LP. It contains 'the six songs from
their self -titled EP, in addition to Standing
in the Dark, Leaders in Danger, Cast a
Shadow, and Sad, Sad Rain.
You'll have heard It Doesn't Really Mat-
ter and the title track on the radio. Their
music is easy to recognize for its starkness.
(again, like the Police) and its compelling -
sound. The moods of the songs vary from the

defiant It Doesn't Really Matter to the
melancholy Sad, Sad Rain to the headbang-
ing tune Video Disease.
Talent runs deep with Platinum Blonde.
Mark Holmes' voice pants, his British ac-
cent (feigned or real) is apparent, yet his
words are -on occasion indistinct., His vocals
contribute an eeriness to the music. Sergio
Galli has good style on guitar. -.he obviously
knows more than the three chords some
guitarists get away with. Chris Steffler,
while no Phil Collins on. drums adds a good
drum roll in the right place..The production
by David Tickle allows the haunting, edges
of the music to come through.
Even though Platinum Blonde is not a
political band, they do have something to
say. Standing. in the Dark attacks the pre-
sent age of Romanticism, saying we all live
in. a video age, allowing ourselves to be led
by the fashions we see. Also, it points out
that love is no longer sacred, but sex -
oriented. .
Ironically, Platinum Blonde is a visual
band, exploiting ' what they deride. They
have produced glamorous videos and have
been maintaining a sex image: they weal -
leather and studs. However, this image has
' paid off. They, have received a flattering .
amount of radio play, and their album
debuted at number 42 on the Music Express
Canada -wide chart. When in concert they
drive their fans hysterical.
• In all, Platinum . Blonde is Canada's
answer to Duran Duran, only with a little
more to say. Rating : 9/10.
