"Then let's begin:" So starts Platinum Blonde's album Standing in the Dark. However, despite its initial juvenile sound, the album is fresh Canadian rock. • The blonde trio (they're similar in this aspect to the Police) have released a strong debut LP. It contains 'the six songs from their self -titled EP, in addition to Standing in the Dark, Leaders in Danger, Cast a Shadow, and Sad, Sad Rain. You'll have heard It Doesn't Really Mat- ter and the title track on the radio. Their music is easy to recognize for its starkness. (again, like the Police) and its compelling - sound. Talent runs deep with Platinum Blonde. Mark Holmes' voice pants, his British ac- cent (feigned or real) is apparent, yet his words are -on occasion indistinct., His vocals contribute an eeriness to the music. Sergio Galli has good style on guitar. -.he obviously knows more than the three chords some guitarists get away with. Chris Steffler, while no Phil Collins on. drums adds a good drum roll in the right place..The production by David Tickle allows the haunting, edges of the music to come through. Even though Platinum Blonde is not a political band, they do have something to say. Standing. in the Dark attacks the pre- sent age of Romanticism, saying we all live in. a video age, allowing ourselves to be led by the fashions we see. Also, it points out that love is no longer sacred, but sex - oriented. . Ironically, Platinum Blonde is a visual band, exploiting ' what they deride. They have produced glamorous videos and have been maintaining a sex image: they weal - leather and studs. However, this image has ' paid off. They, have received a flattering . amount of radio play, and their album debuted at number 42 on the Music Express Canada -wide chart. When in concert they drive their fans hysterical. • In all, Platinum . Blonde is Canada's answer to Duran Duran, only with a little more to say. Rating : 9/10.
