County council is considering several alternatives, including centralization of the library or construction of a new building. During the short but hot discussion, it was pointed out once more that enough space is ready and waiting at Vanastra, nearer to the centre of the county, than Goderich. 25 years ago March 19, 1959 The blizzard which struck this area late Sunday afternoon delayed many motorists and marooned a number who stayed overnight in farm homes and makeshift accommodation in the towns along Highways 4 and 8. Mr. W.G. Pope of Hulled Township, however, stated to the News -Record last week that twice in his recollection he had seen claims in the newspapers about Huron County jailbeing empty. March 18, 1909 Now that the `Veribests' in Bayfield have disbanded, we recommend a rest to some of those old bachelors, who ' spent ,the winter beating their way up to the hall to link with the lady Veribests, some of whom are as yet. in short dresses. The opinion of Capt. Fergus is that those old boys now on the decline of life ought to be ashamed of themselves to continue patronizing the ballroom for the purpose of doting over those young lady Veribests, rather thantryingto prepare a homeand_be satisfied with but one of the number and we'here endorse Cap's opinion. But as the ladies are' satisfied, we don't object and although they pretended offence at the preachers and our columns, yet it was easy to observe them smiling through their tears and probably pleased with their, recently acquired notoriety. 100 years ago 400 - 450 G. 69 NEILSON'SASSORTED ^ FAMILY PACK CHOCOLATE CANDY BARS 4 x REG. STOKELY DARK RED KIDNEY March 19, 1884 Some parties armed with sticks and their faces masked broke into the house occupied by Mr. Galagher of Bayfield and demanded of Mr. Galagher where he kept his money, making threats and demolishing his property, also ill using him. Mr. Galagher recognized one of the party and went to our Chief Magistrate, the Reeve, for a warrant tendering money for the same and was informed by that gentleman that he could not give him a warrant as his evidence and another was not sufficient for a conviction, that it would be necessary to have two witnesses besides himself for a conviction and refused point blank to receive his information, telling Mr. Galagher that they could put him in the lake and the town would be well rid of him. Now, sir, the fact is that Mr. Galagher is a good peaceable and law abiding citizen, honest and industrious, but a conservative, and the Reeve takes this plan to scare out conservatives, but his little game will not work as Mr. Galagher will make it warm for him is he hasto go to the Attorney General.
