VARNA - A beautiful hockey trophy is
being proudly displayed at the general store
in Varna. It was awarded to the Varna team
for the A championship in the Zurich Rec
League Tournament a week ago. In
d, eating Henson Green 6-4, goals were
scored by Wayne C'antelon (2), Mari
Taylor, Roil Keys, Scott Consitt and Bill
Stephenson. They won 5-2 over C. G.. Farm
Supply, then battled to a close 1-0 score over
Don's Food Market, with Dale Stephenson
scoring the only goal, and Doug Reid ear-
ning a shut -out.
Ralph Stephenson returned home on
Saturday morning, after being in -Clinton
Hospital for a week.
The annual meeting of the Huron -Perth
Presbyterial of the United Church Women,
held in St. John's Church in Stratford. Last
Monday, was attended by Margaret Hayter,
Eleanor McAsh, Mary Chessell, and
Regional president, Joyce Dowson. -
Church meeting
The annual meeting of Varna United
Church was held. on Sunday. -afternoon
following lunch at the church. There were 22
preseul_Reu, Milena Brown wascharrman
and 13 ill ` VI--cAsh secretary: Bill; who -his held'
this office for several years, has now
resigned, and Joyce Dowson was elected to
replace him. Ruby Hill has been appointed
an elder to fill the vacancy left, by Murdock
Morrison's resignation when he moved to
Hayfield. The recommendation from the
. Ministry and Personnel Committee---that-
Rev. Brown be invited to stay another year
was unanimously supported. Trustees will
remain the same. Joe Laurie and Ron
Taylor will become chairman and secretary
of the Board of Stewards. There are three
vacancies to fill on this board. The Manse
Committee is unchanged. Carol Simons has
consentedto be the chairman of the
Christian Education Committee.
Sandra Coultis' report from the children's
group received serious consideration, and a
lengthy discussion followed to find ways that
the children and youth can be given more
responsibility in church life. Support was
given to the minister for more in-
tergenerational worship services. A club for
children and teens is being planned for a six-
week trial period this spring at the new
community centre, with leadership needed
for--music,_..crafts_ and games. Scouts • and
Guides will have an opportunity to work for
their Iligion and Life badges through this
program.
Ivan McClymont was asked to look into
having a history of ,Varna Church included
in the new Huron County Atlas. He is
presently collecting information for a•
township atlas.
Miss Brown has been given the op-
portunity to use her study leave and holiday
time to tour the Holy Land with a Bible class
from Mississauga. She will be away for
_parts of May and June. The Sunday School
wilrb "responsible-for-one-service-and-the..-_.._._--
U.C:W. for one other. Her .remaining
holidays will be in August.
Major projects ilii efiaken this past year
were new drains at the church, installed by
several of the men, with the help of Don
Barraclough and his backhoe, a carpet for
the manse dining room, paid for by Goshen
and Varna U.C.W.s, and a piano for the
church, donated by the UCW.
The February UCW meeting is Feb. 2 at
the home of Mary Chessell.
Heart month
February is Heart Month and the canvass
for the Heart Fund will begin shortly.' Bill
Taylor is the chairman for the canvass in
Goderich, Tuckersmith and Stanley
Townships. Members of the Orange Lodge
will be collecting in the area around Varna,
Mary Chessell in the village and Geraldine
Eckel and -Margaret Elliott on the. Goshen
line.
Cliff and Ruth St. John of Wheatley were
weekend ,guests of their daughter Jean Reid
and her family.

seniors to meet a

HOLMESVILLE - Worship Service was
held on Sunday morning at Holmesville
United Church with Rev. Bechtel in charge.
Brenda Harris played the piano during the
service: Del Schloendorf and Larry
Rutledge received the offering. Following
the Church Service the Annual meeting and ,
coffee hour was held.
'The Enterprising Seniors will meet Feb. 2
at 2 p.m. at the Community Centre in
Holmesville., Please .note the last call for

autographed quilt, this is for former or pre-
sent residents of Goderich Township.

Federation ask
for donation
Accounts totalling more than $31,000 were
approved and ordered paid when Goderich
Township Council met in regular session an
January 16. Of this amount, over $18,000 was
for tile loans and $8,500 was for road
superintendent payroll.
Allard Feddes was present at the meeting
to' discuss a severance of about seven acres
from lot 27, concession 4. No motions were
recorded regarding this matter.
Tony McQuail and Larry Sturdy were also
present at the meeting, representing the
Huron County deration of Agriculture.
4,,7.4 Mr. McQuail ed the activities of the
; Federation a '' ., uested that the township
continue with a ronation. Following, this, a
motion .was passed by' council that the
• township give a grant of $800 per year to the
Huron County Federation of Agriculture.
