Volunteers needed now! ,
f
"Despite the fact we're short m mem-
bership we accomplished a lot last year,"
Chairman Frank MacDonald said to five
recreation committee members at their
Jan. 12 meeting, "and it's going to be easier
down the line with the individual job
descriptions."
Recreation committee members in
Clinton are becoming an extinct species. At
present there are seven members. Ideally,
the committee should have nine or 11
members to function efficiently.
The old question arises, Where are all of
those sports oriented people in this. town?
-Why-dont people svantea -say-as-to-vhioh-
direction recreation in this town goes What
''gcod are some of the individual job
descriptions if there is no one to fill them?
"I expect most people are afraid to
volunteer for the. committee because they
don't know what to expect,"said committee
member Charlie Burgess.
Committee member Ron McKay said
participation on the committee has been an
ongoing problem. "Personally I'd like to see
the, younger-. people . involvedwith the
committee," he said.
Mr. McKay stressed the word "active"
committee member. "We need members
who come out on a regular basis," he said.
The Clinton Recreation Committee is
establikhed to conduct or encourage and
assist the programs of recreation which will
meet the needs and interests of the
°inhabitants of Clinton. Such programs shall
include the social cultural and physical,
aspects of recreation as they apply to each
age group, both male and female.
Qualifications of Committee Members
Committee members must be interested
in all aspects of recreation and avoid ad-
vocating •the interests of one group over
scot..... -y. ... ,. _,..........
They should have qualities such as co-
• operativeness, open-mindedness and be
good natured.
They should show an interest in programs
and opportunities for children and adults
and should participate in problem solving
situations in a logical fashion.
Regular attendance at Committee
meetings must be a top priority and
-members must be a ratepayer in the town of
Clinton.
Duties and Responsibilities
A Recreation Committee member is
responsible:
To attend all regular and special meetings
at which the business of the committee is
conducted. Any member who misses three
consecutive months of meetings will be
considered to have- surrendered his -her
membership.
To promote recreation opportunities for
all ages by displaying a positive attitude in
regard to the recreation activities available
in Clinton.
To make yourself available at times other
than regularly scheduled meetings to
participate in special events, ,tournaments,
work parties, etc.
To participate annually in the develop-
ment of capital and operational budgets.
To .participate in the interviewing and
recommendation to hire staff.
To act on special or ad hoc committees as
the need arises.
To endeavour to participate in seminars
and workshops of specific interest to
become better qualified as a' member and to
remain informedof current developments in
recreation.
• Committee members shall not direct staff
members. All problem areas shall be
brought to the attention of the Recreation
Committee Chairman.
To ensure that .discussion at meetings
remains relevant to agenda items.

Walkerton 6-5 and on Sunday Kincardine edged them 5-3. (Rod Hilts photo)

Mustangs rally to beat Hawks
By Rod Hilts
. "Overall, with what we started with and
how we're • playing now, we.have nothing to
be ashamed of. If -the season was •a -month -
longer, we could conceivably make the
playoffs," said Mustangs' Head Coach Bob
Zimmer, following a weekend split against
Walkerton and Kincardine.
Clinton Mustangs' record now stands at 6-
17-3, good for 15 points and fifth place in the
six "team league. Clinton trails the fourth -
place Hanover Barons -by 13 points with four
games remaining in the regular schedule.
On Sunday night, four first -period goals by
the visiting Kincardine Kinucks proved to be
too much for the Mustangs to overcome. On
Friday night, Clinton managed to battle
back from a four -goal deficit to edge the
Walkerton Black Hawks 6-5.
•
Kinucks 5 Mustangs a
A three -goal effort by Dave •Petteplace
powered Kincardine to a 5-3 win and a share
of second place dn the Central Junior C
Group two division. Defenseman Sean
VanDongen led the Clinton attack with two
' goals.
The story of the first period was two
Kincardine powerplay goals _ that were
scored when goalie Pat Cronin and the
Clinton defense were caught out of position.
On both occasions, Cronin went out to
challenge the shooters but was burned on
the- rebounds, after the Clinton defense
failed to cover their cheeks.
• Forty-seven seconds into the game the
Kinucks grabbed the lead when Randy Cline
drifted a slapshot off the inside of the post,
past a screened Cronin.
The line of Tom . "Mr. T" Smith, Brad
Armstrong and Brent Daw came a whisker
away from tying the .score on a powerplay
opportunity at the midway point • of the
period. Armstrong had his best opportunity
with 12 seconds left in a Kinuck penalty. He
had two pdkes at a loose puck before being
steamrolled by the Kinuck defense. Overall,
the Clinton powerplay unit did not enjoy a
good night as it scored • once in eight at-
tempts. •
Kincardine capitalized on their powerplay
opportunity at the 8:25 tnark Dave Fair's
slapshot rebounded off the backboards right
• onto the stick of Petteplace, who slapped the
puck into an empty net. Petteplace was left
uncovered by VanDongen, who didn't see
the unusual bounce come off the boards.
The Clinton defense was guilty of leaving
Petteplace unguarded in front of the net
with 3:36 left and it resulted in Kincardine's
third goal. Al Eadie drew the defense behind
the net and fed Petteplace in the slot, -
leaving Cronin with no chane.
Nine seconds later, Daw scored Clinton's
first goal on a pulverizing slapshot that
whistled over the glove of Randy Petrik.
Petteplace netted his third of the period
with 58 seconds remaining when his team
was on a powerplay. The goal was almost
identical to his first one as Cronin made the
initial save and Pettepiace was "Johnny on
the spot" as he wacked the puck into the
empty net.
The teams started to get chippy in the.
second period and seemed Content to play
bump and grind hockey. VanDongen scored
Clinton's second goal when his blast from
the left point deflected off a Kinuck
defenseman.
A last minute goal by Eadie seemed -to
deflate the Mustangs. Eadie cut in from the
left side and flipped the puck high over the
right shoulder of Cronip. Clinton defen-

Peewees win _Ripley Legion Zone tQtcrnament.
On Jan. 14, the Clinton Peewees travelled
to Ripley and captured the Legion Zone
Hockey Tournament.
In their first game Clinton was matched
up against Hensall. Clinton dominated from
the outset, carrying the play to the weaker
Hensall squad and came away with a 7-1
win. Devon Colquhoun notched four goals
while Norris Flynn had two and Derek
Jefferson the single for the winners.
Coach Greg Burns and Brian Kennedy felt
the boys skated well but as has been the case
all year, the kids knew the opposition was
not strong and tended to over pass and try
for the perfect set up. This win gave the
local squad a bye to, the finals where they
would meet the winner of Kincardine and
Goderich.
After viewing some of the action in this
game, it was apparent that Clinton would
have to play well to beat either of these
teams.
On a disputed penalty shot, Kincardine
won 3-2 to advance to the final.
Clinton got off to a fast start and got a big
lift when Steve Vanderdool fired a high shot
on a feed from Flynn with the game just 18
seconds old. The first period ended with
Clinton up 1-0 as the strong defense held
Kincardine.
In the second period, Clinton broke it open
as Colquhoun notched a "natural hat -trick"
with three successive goals, two coming on a
powerplay off blasts from the point. Scott
Brown assisted on both and Jefferson added

Clinton!, Seaforth J
Clinton Novice A's first defeat came on
Saturday in Seaforth. The holiday season
caught up with the Clinton Novice in the first
and second period as Seaforth outplayed
Clinton.
Ip the first two minutes of play Seaforth's
Mike Watt broke away and scored
unassisted.
Later on in the first period Watt repeated
the first goal unassisted -making -it -a--0..
Clinton's number 10 Danny Wildfong
broke away and scored unassisted at the end
of the first period. Early in the second
period Watt scored his third goal with the
score 3 -1.
The third period brought more tense
moments for the Seaforth goalie as Clinton
came back and scored a goal by Kris Ken-
nedy assisted by Danny Wildfong.
The Clinton players needed a few more
minutes to even the score up but we ran out
of time. Next game with Seaforth is Mon-
day, Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m.
Clinton Novice 4
Milverton l
Clinton Novice travelled' to Milverton on
Friday night and came home with a win.
'Overton started the scoring- from -Robert
Hinchberger assisted by Brent Nauta but
Clinton turned around and scored one mo-
ment later. Clinton's goal was scored by
Mark Livermore• assisted by Lee Gibbings.
The second period was scoreless which
made the game very tight. A tripping penal-
ty in the second period for Milverton did not
make any difference as no goal was scored.
In• the third period Clinton came on strong
adding three goals to the scoreboard. Mark
Livermore scored the second goal assisted
by Shane MacDonald. • The third goal was
scored by Mark Livermore unassisted. The
final goal was scored by Lee Gibbings

Atoms over Zurich
Last Saturday night, Zurich came to town
to 'take on the high -flying Clinton Atoms.
Last time the two teams met they had battl-
ed to. a 2-2 tie in Zurich. But this time the
'Clinton squad was ready and when the final
buzzer had sounded, Clinton had out -gunned
their opponents 8-2.
Clinton broke out on top in the first period
as Scott Jewitt took a pass from Jason Fleet
at the blueline, skated in and scored a
beautiful wrist shot tothe right hand corner.
Zurich tied it at 1-1 on JasonSchilbe's goal.
By the .end of the_ first._period _Scott Jewitt_•
had 'scored two more goals to earn him a
- hat -trick for the game. • _
In the second period Zurich's Jason
Schilbe scored again to narrow the score to
3-2. But it was all Clinton after that as they
scored five unanswered goals. Jason Fleet,
Clinton's hot -shooting defenseman scored
four of the five goals as he and Scott Jewitt
continually dominated the game at both

The third period was a sleeper as neither
team ..played with any intensity. The oc-
casional chippy play and the frigid arena
temperature were the only things that kept
the minimal crowd awake. Clinton scored
with 3:57 left when VanDongen used Kevin
Lee as a screen. Lee turned on the jets and
glided by Petrik, just as VanDongen
unleashed the shot.
The Mustangs gave it a valiant effort in
the final minutes but were unable to score.
Following the game Coach Zimmer
seemed impressed with the Kincardine
team.
"I think they're (Kinlicks) getting back to
where they were at the beginning of the
season. I think their goaltender (Petrik)
came up big tonight," Zimmer said.
Zitnmer went on to say that Clinton has a
good nucleus formed and that the team will
be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
"Right now the Mustangs are about five
players away from lleing a real competitor
in the league."

an assist.
The goaltending duo of Mike Ladd and
Richard Lyndon lost their shut out bid with
just over two minutes to play. Clinton failed
to clear a long rebound after Jefferson
collided with his own goalie. Pat Pore had
virtually an empty net to put it in. Both
teams were a man short at the time.
Jefferson quickly attoned for his miscue
as he scored a pretty goal with 1:47 to play
on a set up from Scott Brown and Greg
Mayhew.
The Clinton team will now advance to the
District Tournament in Walkerton on Feb. 4.
The players and coaches would like to
thank the Clinton' Legion Branch 140 for
their support in financing both of these
tournaments. The team hopes to bring home
another trophy on Feb. 4.

Coaches praise team '
Burns and Kennedy praised their charges
following the tournament saying, "It was
their best third period effort of the year."
Burns added that "stick boy" Dan
Colquhoun has been working the boys hard
the last couple of weeks and thinks it's
beginning to pay off.
'There's a long way to go but the kids are
beginning to realize it's easier to do it our
way and they are' starting to take things a
little more serious," Burns said.
"With only three more league games left
in an undefeated regular schedule and
playoffs just around the corner, it's hard to
say how far they could go with a good team
effort," Burns added.
The Peewees are in action on Jan. 21 as
they host Seaforth at 7:30 p.m. -
