Seventy-four of 190 employees of the Ben-
dix Home Systems Ltd. plant at Henson'
were laid off on Tuesday, bringing to over
500 the number of persons in Huron County
who have become unemployed in the last

Little aMiss New Year is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Willert (nee Joyce
Aikenhead), RR 2, Hensall, born in Clinton.
Public Hospital early Sunday morning,
January 4. She was the first arrival in that
hospital in 1959. Mr. and Mrs. Willert have
six other children, Barbara, Richard, Pat-
sy, Jerry, Sharon and Darlene.
New men on the parks board this year.

Though commonly known as the parks"
board, this group is officially the Clinton
Community Athletic Field Board, and is in
charge of the park, where the grandstand, '

been transferred to St. Marys. "Jack" has
been 'popular here and his many friends are
sorry . to see .him leave; Mr. Lindeman of
"' New Hamburg has been sent here.
Last night's two games, played before a
• fair crowd of hockey fans were filled to the
brim with chills,, spills, fast skating, hard- ,
ehecking.and.-infact:Cverythvng that goes to
make a hockey game interesting.
A Quick Thinker "Mrs. Briggs," said the
new boarder at breaki`ast? "Wrin owns those -
ferry boats I tripped over corning down the
stairs just' now?"
The landlady shot him a fierce look.
"Ferry boats, indeed!". she .cried: "I'll
have you understand they are my shoes."
The boarder gulped uneasily.
'I didn't say ferry boats," he hastily
replied. "I said `fairy boots.' "

The contract for carrying the mails

been re -awarded to Mr. J.W. Elliot who has

Town Hall, Tuesday evening, music being
furnished by the London Harpers.
May Open Again - A couple of practical,
wood -working mechanics were here . the
other day and interviewed the Mayor as to
the possibility of renting the wood -working
department of the Clinton, Thresher Co.,
With a view to -manufacturing- threshers.
The town not having yet -fore -closed under
its agreement, the matter was left in
abeyance, though it is not unlikely the
negotiations may, be satisfactory chosen
later on.

to Monday last a, desperate struggle Was go-
ing on here to wrest the positions of Reeve
and Deputy from the strong . prestige of
Messrs. Corbett and Cooper. Both were con-
sidered very hard men to . beat, more
especially Mr. Cooper, and ag-oil deal of in-
terest was aroused throughout the county as
to the progress of events in Clinton. The
friends of the late Reeve -and Deputy were •
by no fneans idle, and carried on the contest
with all the vigor and energy possible. The
utmost good feeling prevailed, however,
notwithstanding the warmth of the contest.

LUCKNOW - Two Lucknow senior citizens
escaped their blazing home uninjured, when
fire destroyed an Inglis Street home on
December 2L. Lucknow Fire Department
answered the call at midnight to the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reid.
Two passersby from Kincardine and
neighbour David Finnigan assisted the
elderly couple from their home. They had
been awakened by a smoke detector,. They
were taken to the home of fireman Ron
Crich. while firemen tried to put out the fire.
The Reids spent the night with neighbours,
Mr. and Mrs. Archie Nicholson.
