Clinton News-Record, 1983-11-30, Page 5Early Fil s 5 years ago November 30, 1978 The Clinton Spring Fair will celebrate its 125th anniversary next June, but unless the sponsors of the fair get some new volunteers from Clinton and surrounding areas, it may be the last fair to be held in Clinton. In less than three weeks the ice plant will be turned on in the Clinton arena, and skaters will take to the new surface about seven days later, barring any problems. 10 years ago November 29, 1973 The Clinton Community Credit Union members last Thursday night voted to give an eight per cent divident to its members, the highest ever paid by the Credit Union in its 26 year history. The $236,543 to be paid in dividends is part of the nearly $240,000 profit the Credit Union showed this year, which ended September 30, 1973. Ontario Street United Church in Clinton was packed last Saturday night for the Church's 12th annual talent night. The Clinton Lions Club Tuesday night voted to pay $1,800 for a hydraulic lift for the wheelchair van for Huronview. The Lions Club of Goderich is in need of people who have musical talent and would like to become part of their musical ex- travaganza "Festival 74". 25 years ago November 27, 1958 An election will be held at the Dec. 5 general meeting of Clinton Branch 140 of the Canadian Legion to pick a second vice- president and an eight -man executive com-' mittee. Jim Graham and Ed Porter are vy- ing for the vice-president position. A former Clintonian, Mrs. T.A. Fleming (nee Cora Ann. Handy) daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Handy, R.R. 4 Clinton, has given birth to the first twins to be ton at RCAF Station Parent, Quebec. Susan 5 lbs. 8 oz. and Sandra 41bs. 9 oz. first saw the light of day on November 16 at that Northern Quebec Air Defence outpost where their father, Corporal Theodore Alvin Fleming is a radar technician. 50 years ago November 30,1933 The merchants are already beginning to get ready for Christmas and are dressing their windows accordingly. J.T. Knight and Son have quite an attractive window, fitted up to represent a house set in a wintery scene, which when lighted, makes an attrac- tive appearance. Anyone who has never seen the Haugl, Cup, which the Collegiate football team won this year from Listowel, may do so by look- ing in the window of Hellyar's Jewellery Store. Itis a handsome piece of silverware, too. 75 years ago - December 3,1908 The new barber shop next to the Johnstone block is being fitted up for Mr. John,G. Medd who expects to go to Toronto today to buy another up-to-date tonsorial chair, big mirror, etc., etc. He purposes having a swell establishment. Mr. Medd has done well since he embarked in this business and he deserves to as he has had to fight against physical infirmity that would have kept many a man on the bed of repining. Councillor Glenn of Stanley and Mr. Robert Trick of Goderich Township waited upon the county council in Goderich on Tuesday to ask that the bridge across the Bayfield River, which was swept away in the freshet last spring, be replaced. 100 years ago November 28, 1983 The heavy gales during the last two weeks completely closed up the Bayfield harbor with sand and driftwood. The heavy rain of last Thursday raised the Bayfield River to an unprecedented height. The piers on which the government expended a large amount of money were in danger of being washed away all together. The sandbar at the mouth of the river prevented the outflow of water from the river. The back water thus continued surrounding the fishermen's houses. No serious damage to private pro- perty. Women's rights - The other day a young man in one of the neighboring towns went to the house of his darling with the understanding that she was then to fulfil her oft sought promise and become his bride. The cab stopped at the door, but enquiry revealed that she was not at home. The disappointed suitor drove to the railway sta- tion and found her on the platform about starting on a visit to some friends, and tapp- ing her on the shoulder asked if she was not ready now. The sought for one did not display a ladylike disposition for she very unceremoniously turned and slapped her would be husband on the face. The latter says he would not care but she gave the thing away in front of the whole "audience". Lucky guess • As he counted a large stack of $100 bills in- to the little old lady's wrinkled hand, the bookie shook his head and said, "I swear, lady, I'd sure like to know how you managed to pick such a long -shot winner." She adjusted her wire -rimmed spectacles and tittered. "I really don't know myself, young fellow. I just shut my eyes and stick a pin in the paper, and there it is!" "Yeah," persisted the bookie, "that could happen once in a while, I guess, but how did you manage to pick four winners yesterday afternoon?" "Oh, that was very easy," she said, smile lines crinkling around her eyes. "Von see, I couldn't find a pin yesterday so I used a fork." SUNSHINE 2°t, PARTLY SKIMfviE[) FRESH.
