Clinton News-Record, 1983-11-02, Page 5FLEECY LIQUID FABRIC SOFTENER 3.6 I. 2.39 E . ray Files 5 years ago November 2, 1978 Clinton's oldest industry, the piano fac- tory has seen many changes throughout its long history. This Friday, November 3 another change will be made when the factory officially closes its doors, resulting from a consolidation to the Heintzman Company. Huron County Council refused to support the Vanastra Resource Centre at its Friday session when it received a request from the centre for a $5,000 grant. 10 years ago November 1, 1973 Ben Tuckey, Exeter, a past warden of Huron County presently chairman of the Board of Directors of Huron Country Playhouse near Grand Bend, visited Huron County Council last week to request $2,000 in a grant toward the theatre endeavor. 25 years ago October 30, 1958 Several of the Legion members attending the banquet meeting of the Clinton Branch 140 Canadian Legion at the' hall here on Monday night were treated to an excellent view of one of the Russian Sputniks as it sped across the sky. Those were the good old days ... this line of reminiscing made the senior commissioner recall a sort of "donnybrook" which broke out on the old skating rink (located where Canada Packers feed mill now stands) and the town constable (same chap who opposed the water system by the way) was called to the scene ... He arrived at the rink in his bedroom slippers, and was rather han- dicapped at the start ... Then in the scuffle he lost the slippers and ended up doing his job in stocking feet ... 50 years ago November 2, 1933 Clinton is to:.have another lawyer, Mr. D. Nairn of Goderich having taken an office on Isaac Street, next to Ford and Son's flour and feed store. Once again "Poppy Day" draws near to prompt the citizens of this county in the duties they have inherited from the past generation. The Great War is passing almost into legend but the symbo:ism of the Poppy, the sorrowful appropriateness of its blood -red bloom, takes on a deeper significance with each succeeding year. 75 years ago October 29, 1908 The local YMCA is progressing quite favourably. They have rented the room at the rear of the Royal Bank, formerly oc- cupied by Mr. Ireland and this week are having it furnished with chairs and tables ready for the regular meeting on Thursday night. Part of the evening will be devoted to Bible Study, the subject being "The Life of Abraham". President Hartley will lead. There is also some important business to be transacted, viz., the fixing of the mem- bership fee, the matter of putting in a piano, and the drafting of definite program of Social, Literary and Physical work for the fall and winter. It is expected that the office of the county secretary will be removed to this room shortly and that the county committee will hold its quarterly meetings there in future. It is hoped that there will be a good attendance of young men at tonight's meeting. Come, says secretary, bring your Bibles with you and let us have a good time. A woman came down from Goderich yesterday afternoon and raised such a howl on the streets that Chief Wheatly had to take her in charge. He escorted her to the station and saw to it that she took the first train from whence she came. Glad to get rid of her so easily. 100 years ago October 31, 1883 The usual gathering from the surrounding country took place last Wednesday on the occasion of our annual Brant exhibition. A newly married couple, who were enjoying themselves in seeing the various attractions of the town, strolled hand-in-hand down our principal street, taking in the candy shops, and admiring the displays of goods in the different windows. Coming to a shop in which a couple of handsome garments were exhibited, they stood in rapt admiration, and finally concluded that they would in- vest. Stepping inside, they blushingly asked the cost of the nightdresses shown in the window. The saleswoman was surprised, but took in the situation very rapidly, and named the price. The couple conversed in a whisper, smiled, blushed again, and finally the purchase was made and the two departed, happy in the possession of what they imagined were chemise -night dresses, but which were shrouds, as the shop was an undertaker's. The brideLa choice was decorated with the legend, "At Rest."
