Clinton News-Record, 1983-10-26, Page 24Where can you listen to .: jazz piano, classical piano and flute, vocal solos and choral music and participate in a sing - along, all in two hours? At the Great Grand Piano Gala Concert on November 4 at 8:30 o.m. at Blvth Memorial Hall. that's where. The concert is being held to celebrate the arrival of the piano and to put it through its paces and showcase its versatility. ITickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children and all proceeds will go to the Piano Fund. Anyone who has attended many Blyth plays in recent years will recognize the jazz pianist of the evening. Composer and per- former John Roby wrote and performed the music for Country Hearts, Fire on Ice and The Life that Jack Built. At times he has also been heard providing dinner -time music in the basement of the hall before summer performances. John will welcome people to the concert with the rag -time and jazz standards which he does so well. la Orchestra London will provide their , pianist and flautist to fill out the more serious portion of the evening, playing light selections from the classics. Blyth is also pleased to welcome Mary Gustafson, vocal instructor at the Faculty of Music, Uiversity off Western Ontario, as part of the evening's program. The piano has now arrived at Blyth Memorial Hall, but the work of raising money for it is not quite over. The decision to purchase now was taken because of the large price increases the piano has un- dergone since the beginning of the fund drive. Further price increases were ex - peered soon. The Piano Fund stands almost at $9,000. but more is needed to snake nn the final price off $13,375. "Keys" are still available at $250 each, and donations of any amount are very welcome and are tax deductible. Proceeds from the Piano Gala will also go to retiring this debt. I had fallen asleep while listening to my Talking Heads album, Speaking in Tongues. My cat is going crazy, skittering around, then stopping to claw the speakers. She tries to reach the turntable. I don't think she likes the music. Come to think of it, why did I buy this non- conformist, sometimes surrealist album? It started with the airplay Burning Down the House was getting. This song has a massive, powerful beat (in conformity with today's rock) that commands you to dance. The song Swamp was included in the flick Risky Business. The rest of Speaking in Tongues is nothing special music -wise. The beat turns funky, not at all like hit single; doesn't vary much from song to song. I did figure out that Speaking in Tongues deals a lot with man's need to know he's doing the right thing good to know that the Talking Heads can see into man's psyche, but if you don't have time to study the liner notes, Speaking in Tongues, with the exception of Burning Down the House, is the kind of music that ... makes cats go crazy. Rating: 51/z/10. FACTOR - Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records Canada's first funding organization, FAC- TOR, is expanding. Founded by Duff Roman, FACTOR is heading for its second year of helping Canadian musicians, after Fish andg ane club to hold Halloween dance tapes. FACTOR is successful. "Of nine records released, eight received extensive radio play", stated Roman in FACTOR's Annual Report. Don't think that only unknown artists need help. FACTOR gave assistance last year to Lee Aaron and Martha and the Muffins. To receive a loan from FACTOR (loans are from $400 - $25,000) is not as easy as say- ing, "okay, give me $1,000." You must apply first. Out of 200 applicatns last year, only 50 were accepted. However, if your application is not accepted, you will receive a written explanation containing constructive criticism.
