The five stal employees at the Clinton
Post Office who are "absent without leave"
may be coming into work Thursday after
Gilles Lamontagne, Postmaster General
gave striking postal workers an ultimatum
on Tuesday afternoon.
Thanks to a pledge of $5,000 from the
Clinton Lions Club, the total canvass for the
arena floor fund jumped $10,000 in the last
week and has now hit the $39,000 mark.
Voters won't be going to the polls at all in
Clinton this year, as all positions were filled
by acclamation.

Health and Welfare Minister Marc
LaLonde announced on Friday that a $5,000
Federal Government was awarded to a
group of retired people in the Goderich area.
Thick fog blanketed the area last Tuesday
morning, slowing traffic to a near standstill
and delaying many school buses. Combined
with the smoke of burning leaves in many
towns, the fog formed a choking smog. The
fog gave way to a warm, sunny Indian
summer day about 11 a.m.

Initial plans for a badly needed Scout Hall
for the Town of Clinton have begun to be
made. Clinton is fortunate in having an
excellent camp for outdoors training of the
Scouts and cubs, but there is no place for
them to meet the winter time.
Clinton will be the site of the annual
meeting of District 2 of the Ontario Medical
Association next Tuesday and Wednesday,
October 28 and 29. Huron County Medical
Society is host and Dr. Frank Newland,
Clinton, is president of the district.
This year on October 31, children of
Clinton will be ringing door -bells with
requests for treats, and adding the call,
"Shell out for UNICEF collection at
'Hallowe'en."

This community shipped some supplies
west last week, the car being started here
and finished at Seaforth. The consignment
was not so large as that sent a couple of
years ago, when a full carload went from
here. The ladies of different organizations
are shipping a bale of clothing.
Saturday afternoon witnessed a rather
severe electrical storm in this section, and
the evening brought even a worse one, when
trees were blown down and anything loose
was tossed about considerably. The worst
feature was the interference with hydro,
lights and power going .off between ten and
eleven, interfering seriously with late
shoppers. They were off until theee or four
Sunday morning.
Mayor Trewartha received the other day
a letter from the secretary of His
Excellency, the Governor-General,
thanking him for the kindly reception given
himself and Lady Bessborough on their
stopping at Clinton last week and saying
that he was sending along photographs of
himself and the countess which could be
framed and placed in the town hall.

"The London Season of 1908 and the Pan-
American Congress," is the title of the
lecture to be given by Miss Hill of Toronto in
St. Paul's school house on Monday afternoon
at 3:30 p.m. Miss Hill is widely and
favorably known to Clinton and vicinity and
a cordial inviation is extended to all ladies to
be present. Miss Hill has only just returned
from abroad.

The Annual Fall Exhibition of the
Township of Hullet Agricultural Society was
held in Clinton on Wednesday and Thursday
of last week. The first day the weather was
chilly but clear and a very large number of
people were on the grounds during the day.
In the evening the Hall was densely filled
with eager and pleased visitors. "Best ever
held in Clinton," was an expression often
heard. With reference to fruit and
vegetables: "Never saw anything equal to it
in the country," with an occasional: "Beats
the Guelph," and "Almost equal to the
Western," were exclamations either boldly
ventured or sotto voice expressed.
Messrs. Thompson and Switzer are doing
a big thing in the apple business among the
farmers in this neighborhood. They have
secured, we believe, all the applies in this
vicinity.
