The first Blyth Beavers met at Legion
Hall for their regular meeting. "Hawkeye"
led the Beavers in playing Duck Duck Goose
as their gathering game. "Bubbles" led in
the opening and feeding the beavers. A
Beaver name off "Cookie" was chosen by the
Beavers for Sharon Glousher, our new
Beaver Leader.
The Beavers welcomed back "Fred"
Brad Ferguson from Belgrave. "Fred" was
a Beaver helper last year.
Who Stole The Cookie and the Yodelling
Song were led by "Rusty". The leaders
helped the Beavers learn their Law Promise
and Matto and explained the meaning of
each. A Beaver poster with the Law Pro-
mise and Motto on was made as a craft. The
Grande Olde Duke of York action song was
sung. The closing and prayer was led by
"Rusty".
Double celebration for the Littles
Last week was an eventful one for Blyth
residents, Joe and Jean Little. Oct. 1 was
Joe's 83rd birthday, and to celebrate the oc-
casion the Littles held open house for friends
and neighbors at their home on Dinsley
Street, East.
Sept. 29, 1983, was the Littles' 55th wed-
act"Fr d"
cling anniversary, and to honour Joe and
Jean, Hazel Dalrymple invited friends and
neighbors to her home for a social time.
They presented the Utiles with a silk floral
arrangement with Vera Badley giving the
congratulatory remarks. Cake and other
refreshnients were served after which a
game of cards was enjoyed.
Mr. and Mrs. Little were married at high
noon in the Wingham Presbyterian manse
on Sept. 29, 1928, on a beautiful warm day
like the 1983 one. The bride and groom and
their two attendants enjoyed a family din-
ner in Belgrave before setting out in Joe's
Chevrolet touring car replete with side cur -

They had not travelled far when they suf-
fered a blow out. Joe put on the spare tire
asking no help from his beautiful bride.
Deciding they did not want to cope with tire
insecurity, they spent the night in a nearby
hotel, had the flat tire repaired the next
morning, and lost no time getting on the
road to their destination; honeymooners'
paradise (especially in the 1920s) Niagara
Falls.
The community extends best wishes for
good health to Joe and Jean Little as they
begin the journey through their 56th year of
happily wedded life.

Charles and Evelyn Smith had a "magnificent" celebration in honor of their 50th Wed-
ding Anniversary. Family and friends from as close as Blyth and as far as Sault Ste.
Marie came to congratulate the happy couple. ( Wendy Somerville Photo)
Smiths have "magnificant"
family celebration
By Wendy Somerville
Mrs. Evelyn Smith first met her husband
Charles at his sister's house when she was
visiting. The fact that Charles Smith farmed
a mile and a half down the road from
Evelyn's home, probably forced the two to
meet eventually.
The courted for two years and were then
married in the United Church in Auburn.
Because the depression had just hit,
newlyweds seldom held large receptions.
"We went back to my wife's parents
house where we had a small dinner party,"
remembers Charles Smith.
The couple went on to Mr. Smith's sister's
home for a combined honeymoon and family
reunion.
The Smith's settled on a farm in East
Wawanosh where they farmed and raised
their three children. They had two sons,
Gordon who now lives in Mississauga, and
Lyle, who is now living in Sault St. Marie
and one daughter, Margery who is living in
Kitchener. They also have three grand-
children.
Seven years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Smith
decided to retire in Blyth and they now live
in a comfortable home near the downtown
area.
Evelyn Smith describes her anniversary
celebrations held on Sunday, October 2, as
"magnificent!"
"We had a wonderful time at the Blyth
United Church," she said.
Family and friends from as close as Blyth
and as far as Sault St. Marie came to taost
the happy couple.
Evelyn Smith will admit that she and her
husband have been happily tarried all
these years. "Even though I of a little
cranky on the odd day," adds Charles Smith
with a laugh.
