Clinton News-Record, 1983-10-05, Page 5e,;. r eo IA GP ' from page 4 buyers. A seller can set his price where he pleases. Nothing happens until a buyer makes an offer. Various studies by the Lands Directorate of Environment Canada have substantiated the major impact of part-time and hobby fanning on land values. Let's be clear that we do support an increase in the loss write-off limit to $10,000. We support a substantial use by all farmers of this tax benefit. We did not choose this as an an arbitrary figure. This should be fair to all beginning farmers. A young farm family working for $10 per hour could expect to have $10,000 worth of taxable income in a year. Our most recent provincial board meeting also concluded that we would support a change in Section 31 for those farmers who use accrual accounting. Dropping of the limit for them is ac- ceptable to us. In summary, let's not forget that the policy is a subsidy from public monies to those losing money in agriculture. Let's be honest and admit that farm tax policies already provide major benefits not available to non-farm entrepreneurs. In recent years CFFO has adopted a number of resolutions calling for a targetted use of public funds. The use of public funds to support those with taxable incomes of more than $10,000, in our view, should be limited. There are others who need it more. Greetings and Shalom, Elbert van Donkersgoed, Research and Policy Director Early Files 5 years ago October 5, 1978 The thermometer for the Clinton arena floor canvass warmed up a bit more this week, as receipts climbed to $22,595. Last Sunday afternoon many former members and friends returned to Holmesville for the first in a number of the Church's centennial celebrations. 10 years ago October 5, 1973 Clinton council has decided to install crosswalks at four points in Clinton, Police Chief Lloyd Westlake informed the News - Record this week. Water consumption at Vanastra con- tinues to increase, Clerk Treasurer, James McIntosh informed members of the Tuckersmith Township Council at a meeting in Brucefield on Tuesday. He said the water bill at Vanastra for September amounted to $1,872 up $512 from August. 25 years ago October 2,1958 Clinton Public Utilities Commission has accepted a firm offer to purchase their present office building at the corner of Albert Street and Rattenbury Street. The sale is being handled through the office of K. W. Colquhoun Real Estate broker. Cer- tain details of the sale have yet to be finalized. 50 years ago October 5, 1933 The long -waited -for chicken tournament took place as scheduled on Monday even- ing, when over 40 bowlers participated. The tournament was staged due to the generosity of the following members who each donated a chicken: A. J. McCartney, Dr. T. G. Thompson, J. L. Heard, P. Liver- more, Jas. R. Miller, M. J. Schoenhals, N. Ball, Norman Millar, and Geo. Evans. Don't take off the screen doors yet awhile. We shall have Indian Summer, when it is pleasant to have the doors open again. 75 years ago October 8, 1908 The GTR is making repairs about the local station such as would not indicate that the company intends building a new station at an early date. They are also sinking a well which may or may not be ac- cepted as evidence that when a new station is erected it will be upon the present site. By the way the curbing is of cement in a proportion of about four to one. The Conservatives have opened a com- mittee room in the Elliot Block while the Liberals will congregate in the vacant store next to A. Jiggs'. Deliveries of apples at the evaporator continue but for big loads Frank Keegan and Perry Ferguson have them all beat. At least they so claim and we don't care to say them nay. 100 years ago October 3, 1883 Mr. D. McDonald's horse ran away from here on Monday. He speeded for about two miles regardless of appearances or con- sequences. Sometimes the buggy the animal was attached to was right side up and sometimes it wasn't. Mr. McDonald collected the scattered fragments of the buggy, which were strewed along the road for two miles, and brought them to Clinton. Getting them together was not quite as dif- ficult a matter as for a cooper to build a barrel around a bung hole brought him. Die damage is about $25. There was a good deal of "coon hunting" done in this vicinity this fall. The more corn disappeared the more corn appeared, and a greater demand for fine boots than the booty warranted. The later some were out "cooning" the less game they brought home. Cooning covers a multitude of sins - hei e. CLINTON NEWS -RECORD. WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 5,1983-PAG.E 5 UP TO 7.2 KG.
