Clinton News-Record, 1983-08-24, Page 15by sieve cooke With the opening of the hunting season just a few short weeks away, there are a few reminders I would like to give. The first one concerns the controlled deer hunt in Huron County. Applications for the draw must be in Ministry hands by August 31st, or they will not be in- cluded. No excuses are accepted! 1f you haven't sent yours in yet, 1 would suggest a trip to Wingham to get the job done. If you have an application, but haven't mailed it yet, I would suggest registered mail just to be on the safe side. Call the Ministry of Natural . Resources office in Wingham at ZE.72,000 if more information is required. Applications for the fall session tor the Hunter's Safety Course are also starting to come in according to Mr W. Montgomery. One of the problems, according to Mr. Montgomery, with the fall session at the High School is that by the time the course is completed, the bulk of the hunting season is over. An earlier or ac- celerated session might be better for the young hunter, but would require the cooperation of everyone involved in the course. The Hunter Safety course is not just for first time hunters either. I took the course again a couple of years back to see what it was like and enjoyed it thoroughly. It's a good refresher course for all hunters involving many aspects of shooting and firearms safety, and a little reminder about safety doesn't hurt anyone. i or more information on starting dates, location, duration, etc., contact Mr. W. Montgomery at 482-9368. The other way to get ready for the fall season is to visit the Hunting Show in Toronto on September 9, 10 and 11. Inst year, the inaugural show proved to be a huge success, so huge, however, that some crowding and catering problems were experinced, but hopefully, all that is history. This year, the show is 75 percent bigger on a greatly expanded floor space, making this the largest exhibition for hunters ever to take place in Canada. The whole approach to the Hunting Show is a hands on experience wherever possible. Where else could you go .and find ranges for longbows, crossbows, air rifles and slingshots, all under one roof under the guidance of expert instructors? Youngsters can try the above, as well as whittle a decoy head, build a nesting box or get a lesson in duck calling. Speaking of duck calling, one of the major highlights of the show is the Molson Canadian Calling Cham- pionship. Moose, godse and duck callers all compete for top honors in their class. Competition is stiff, but if you can coax ducks into your decoys with your favorite call, then maybe you could be the Canadian Champion. Why not consider entering the competition? There can only be one winner, but the opportunity to learn new tips and techniques can pay dividends many times over in increased bags. The Ralston -Purina Sporting Dog Arena is another big crowd pleaser, and this year one whole wing of the center is devoted to it. The show features most of the major hunting breeds seen in the field today and demonstrations ,of training and handling will be ongoing throughout the show. Falconry, knifemaking, and a decoy competition are also included. A large display by the Canadian Ta xideriny Association will show you what your trophy can look like when properly mounted. It may even give you.some idea of who you might want to do the work on that big buck you are going to bag this fall. Conservation clubs will be there with exhibits featuring things like nest box building, wildlife habitat management, waterfowl identification and game bird breeding. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ontario Provincial Police wilh#lso be there so hunters can get explanations of our sometimes hazy or obscure hunting and firearm regulations. Hudson's Bay is also hosting an expanded workshoparea to upgrade fur handling techniques by hunters and trappers. Hosted by Ontario out of Doors and the Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the 1983 Hunting Show is bound to be one of the best things that could happen to hunters this fall. Held at the International Center, one mile north of the airport on Airport Road in Toronto, it will be open from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday; 10 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12 and parking is free. Mark the 9th, 10th and 11th off on your calendar now — and dgp't miss it! Clinton has not had a swim team for a number of years, but this summer's team made up for lost time by coming out on top. he size of the team grew rapidly. Instead of the 11 starting members, it ended up with a grand total of 57 team members who all swam well. The team, coach- ed by various lifeguards, practiced three hours a week doing lengths upon lengths of the pool, improving their racing skills and speed. There were three swim meets before the finals. The Clinton team placed second out of four teams in the Goderich and Exeter meets, losing by only 10 points to Exeter. The Clinton team hosted a meet on August 6. The results were outstanding with Clinton Winning top honors with 523 points. The closest team was Goderich with 316 points. The next meet to be held was the Inter County Swim Association Finals. There were eight teams at the final meet. Once again, on August 20, Clinton was victorious, beating the second place team (St. Marys) by 72 points. The coaches would like to congratulate the swim team for their excellent swimming this year and, also, our special thanks goes out to the parents who came out and supported us at our meet. Congratulations and we hope to see everybody next year! 3 pk.ofSPORT SOCKS This$6.49 With the value a purchase of Every pair of shoes Choose from these famous brands Nike, Adidas, Bauer, Osaga, etc. Vagabond Sports Bag ONLY 49s Radio fhaek Iva 4)11 1 MAIN CORNER Mens Fastball Top 10 Batters In Playoffs 1.
