Thousands hne route
for anniversary parade
KURTZVILLE - Under
sunny skies, with thousands
lining the route, the Wallace
Township 125th anniversary
parade went off without a
hitch on July 30.
The parade included over
200 entrants and lasted about
an hour and 10 minutes.
Following the parade the
Bavarian garden at the
Wallace Community Centre
did a brisk business in the
sweltering heat. There were
a variety of games for the
enjoyment of the children.
Nearly 1,000 children
participated in the games,
including bubble gum
blowing and frog jumping
contests.
St. Marys Lincolns,;13,000 in
the red
ST. MARYS - The St. Marys
Lincolns Junior B hockey
Learn is approximately
$13,000 in the red going into
the 1983-84 season.
Club president Stew
McLennan said it was
'critical" that the team
raise the money to keep the
28 -year-old operation afloat.
Lincolns owe $5,000 to
PARQ plus $10,000 on other
loans.
"Lincs and PARQ will be
holding meetings to come up
with a compromising
solution to how the loan will
be ' paid back," said Mr.
McLennan.
It cost the St. Marys
hockey club about $58,000 to
operate the team last season.
Mr. McLennan estimates it
will cost $5,000 to $10,000
more this season.
Quality craft festival
LUCKNOW - The Lucknow
Agricultural Society's 13th
annual craft festival was
held on Friday and Satur-
day, July 29 and 30, in the
Lucknow Arena.
Many spectators com-
plimented the committee on
the quality of the many fine
displays this year. The
exhibitors were very ap-
preciative of the opportunity
of being able to drive into the
arena to unload their crafts.
An average attendance
was reported for the two day
show.
Miss Judy Ward, Miss
Lucknow Fall Fair and Miss
Mid -Western Ontario 1982
was present to make the
major draws.
AgriculturatSociety
restores roundhouse
SEAFORTH - Visitors to the
new Seaforth and District
Community Centre may
have noticed something new
at the nearby old roun-
dhouse, owned by the
Seaforth Agricultural
Society.
What's new is a cedar
shake roof, the first step in
the Society's plan to restore,
and refurbish the building,
built about 1900.
"The roof alone will cost
about $8,000," says Ken
Coleman, of the Society.
The building, designated
historically and ar-
chitecturally valuable
several years ago by the
town, will be eligible for a
grant of up to $2,000 under
the province's BRIC
program.
The Society also plans to
Anstall corner moldings,
which will be of old style
galvanized material. Last
year the Agricultural Society
asked local people for
opinions on whether the
building should be saved.
The majority who wrote
letters to the editor said yes.
Service study for
Exeter employees
EXETER - The name of B.C.
Premier Bill Bennett
cropped up in a discussion on
town staffing at Exeter
council, and the reaction of
works superintendent Glenn
Kells to the tenor of the
debate was similar to that of
some people in B.C. who are
angered over their gover-
nment's austerity program
which has resulted in
decreased services and
staffing.
The debate erupted when
works committee chairman
Don MacGregor reported
that two members of the
staff, Duncan Pennycock
and Milt Taylor, would be
retiring in August.
The committee recom-
mended that council appoint
Taylor to fill Pennycock's
position as supervisor at the
landfill site and that a full-
time laborer be hired to fill
Taylor's vacancy.
MacGregor said the
committee had discussed the
alternatives "for quite some
time" and felt that a full-
time employee was required.
However, Mickle
suggested that the matter
should be studied further.
He recommended that
council not go to a full-time
replacement until the entire
situation of services and
staffing be given a full study.
