OF 8 ROLLS 2.99 Early Files 5 years ago August 10,1978 Fire raged through a turnup-wax processing plant near Hensall early Saturday morning causing a loss estimated at $250,000. Fire officials said the blaze was discovered about 5:15 a.m. when a neighbor, Richard Willart of RR 2 Kippen was awakened by an explosion. When the Hensall firemen arrived at the plant, located one and a quarter miles west of Hensall on the second concession of Hay Township, the roof had already fallen in and they were unable to save the large 120 x 50 foot building. A nearby storage plant and a mobile home escaped the flames. 10 years ago August 9, 1973 Tuckersmith Township will sell to the Ontario Municipal Improvement Corporation the debenture issue of $125,000 which will be used by the Tuckersmith Municipal Telephone System to up -date the system. Interest rate will be nine per cent per annum. 25 years ago August 8, 1957 Four fire brigades fought flames for four hours to control a fire early Wed- nesday morning in a 40 x 60 foot elevator at Mickle's Mill at Hensall. Loss has been estimated at $20,000. The elevator was cram- med with 10,000 bushels of wheat, oats and barley, much of it from the new crop which is now moving to elevators from South Huron Farms. Good news for those who enjoy seeing their movies out-of-doors, is word that Brownie's Drive -In Theatre is installing one of the widest possible screens. Definitely, it is the widest screen to be found in Huron County and promises movie goers in this area the best in film en- tertainment. 50 years ago August 10, 1933 Mrs. N. Mcllveen, a native of Clinton, who was motoring with her sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. A.R. McBride of Essex was in- jured when the car struck a threshing machine. There had been a slight fall of rain and the threshing outfit did not have lights. Mrs. McBride and Mrs. Mcllveen are in Memorial Hospital, St. Thomas, suffering from cuts and shock. The people of Clinton were very much surprised last week to hear rumors that Mr. J.P. Sheppard and Miss Kate, had sold their grocery business. Mr. Sheppard and Miss Kate have been in business for over 24 years. They bought the business on April 5th, 1908, from Tyndall and Carr, who had recently purchased it from Mr. Thos. Beacom. Mr. Sheppard and Miss Kate had no intention of selling out as they love being among people. It was force of circumstances which helped them to decide to sell their business to Mr. Fred Match and his sons Will and Frank. Both Mr. Sheppard and his sister Miss Kate are both getting on in years and they feel now that they are free to do things they didn't get time to do in the last twenty-five years. 75 years ago August 6,1908 Mr. Ben Cole met with a painful accident on Saturday afternoon last. He was standing on one of the joists surveying the work at St. Josephs church when he fell and struck heavily against a scanting, knocking out three of his teeth and so loosening a fourth that he had thl tbr. pull it out. His mouth and chin were also severley cut so that he is not likely to forget the mishap for some time to come. To make matters worse for Ben, his good wife is over in Michigan visiting her sisters. WO years ago August 10, 1883 Plenty of work for those who want to do it. One day last week a man applied to Mrs. Call's s boarding house for board and lodging, stating that he is going to work at the fon- ndary. He came at night and got his supper and bed and breakfast next morning, and then left without paying Mrs. Call. There are a good many dogs about this town, which appear to have no other object in existance than to make night hideous. Those who are light sleepers or are of nervous temperrnent are constantly subject to their annoyance, and would be a relief if about one-half the worthless curs were sum- marily disposed of. 4 CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 1983 -PAGE 5 US AG NOW AVAILABLE ® BU NSMASTE R BUNS I.G.A. 1ST GRADE CREAMERY BUTTER 1 LB. 1.99 ROYALE WHITE, PUMPKIN, ALMOND PRINTED PAPER TOWELS PKG.
