Theatre ivor-kshp is truly
a learning experience
By D. Kloeze
Everybody knows about
the theatre going on at the
Blyth Summer Festival
every year, and the talent
and hard work that must go
in to make a success of the
plays. But not as many
people are aware that
another theatrical venture
goes on in Blyth, that takes
up perhaps just as much
talent and hard work: a
children's theatre workshop.
This is the fourth year the
young company has been
operating. It provides a
chance for children in the
area to get acquainted with
the theatre.
The workshops are run in
two phases. The first three
weeks were for children
from 5 to 12 years old. That
might seem a bit young to
start learning about theatre
production or acting, and the
programs supervisor Judi
Skinner says, "Some mor-
nings we spent more time in
the washroom than in the
theatre."
After three weeks with
Judi, the children had a week
of workshops with the
Manitoba Puppet Theatre.
The children also put on two
shows for parents at the end
of their workshops. Judi says
the little room in the old bank
building was packed for both
shows.
The second phase is for
older children, from 13 to 17
years -old. They also will be
putting on a show at the end
of four weeks, but it will be a
larger production than the
younger children had.
The play is called Circus
Gothic, written by Jan
Kudelka, and is about her
experiences with the Loyal
Brothers circus in the
Maritimes.
The older children are
working out of the white
garage on Dinsley St., and
will be presenting their play
there on August 17, 18, and
19. The garage is much
larger than their other room,
and is a better working space
for the young actors who are
already working on the play.
This is the first time
Louise Yocco, from
Wingham, has come to the
theatre workshop, and she
says she is having a good
time. "I wanted to learn
more about acting."
Sonne of the members, like
Trudy Passchier of Blyth
have been at the workshop in
past years. Trudy says that
"each year, the more you go
on, you learn more and
more." She says each of the
instructors takes a different
approach to teaching, and
always have something new
to offer. Past instructors, for
instance, have stressed
theatre production, while
this year Judi works more on
performance.
The workshops are run
five days a week, both
morning and afternoon. The
morning is spent learning
about different theatrical
and acting techniques,
working with voice, speech,
movement, improvisation,
scene study, theatre games,
and mime.
The afternoons are spent
putting the morning's work
to practical use. The
children make up their own
mime and improvisation
skits; they also spend the
afternoons working on
Circus Gothic.
Judi has just recently
graduated from Sheridan
College's drama program.
She has taught workshops
before in Hamilton, and is
glad to be able to work so
closely with Blyth's summer
theatre. She says "the kids
are great, and the town is
supportive."
Judi is being helped this
year by Lisa Frayne, from
R.R. 3 Goderich. Lisa has
taught dancing before, and
helps Judi with everything,
especially the play's
choreography and the warm-
up exercises. Lisa says she
likes working with kids, and
she likes theatre too, so this
job is perfect for her in-
terests.
The two girls are working
under the auspices of the
Blyth Summer Festival, and
were hired with an
Experience '83 grant from
the Ontario Ministry of
Citizenship and Culture.
Seniors meet at Conservation Park
By Sheron Stadelmann
On June 27 a large number
of the members of the Blyth
Swinging Seniors went to
Benmiller. Conservation
Park for their annual picnic.
After grace was sung they
all sat down to a delicious
dinner, so capably served by
their lunch convener Fern
Howatt.
The rest of the afternoon
was spent playing Lost Heir
and Euchre which was en-
joyed by both the winners
and losers. Our next big
event will be on August 24 at
the Triple K. Restaurant in
Blyth for dinner together at
5:30 p.m. Those interested in
going for this dinner please
contact Nora Kelly 523-4585.

Blyth Lawries win B Division
In the Seaforth Industrial
Mens Tournament the Blyth
Lawries team played some
excellent ball to bring home
the "B" Division trophy. In a
close game against the
Seaforth Villagers, Lawries
lost I-0 to move them into the
consolation round and
brought them up at'ainst Mt
Carmel. La wries won this
game by a 8-9 score. They
started their first game on
Sunday by scoring five runs
in the first inning and
holding the Seaforth Bears to
only one run to win the semi-
final game 5-1 and put them
in the finals against the Ex-
eter Shakers. The Shakers
had beaten Lawries in an
Exeter Tournament but this
time due to excellent pit-
ching from Bruce Bromley
and fine fielding plays,
Lawries came home with the
trophy by winning the game
4-3. Excellent play on first
and a crucial hit won Barry
Bromley the M.V.P. Award.
Last weekend the Blyth Baintoneers hosted a Women's fastball tournament. Blyth
picked up the consolation crown while Waterloo Insurance won the championship. The
Edgewood Penguins won the runner-up and Blanshard Bells placed fourth. (Rod Hilts
