The days of eight and ten
parties on one telephone line
are almost over in the
Clinton exhange, Peter
Croome, local Bell Canada
Manager, said last week.
A four-year, $600 million
program is now underway
through Bell Canada
territory to introduce a four -
party maximum service on
rural lines and make
available private or two
party service to most
customers in the rural areas.

The outlook for the 1973
crop year is much improved
because of rains during last
week, Mike Miller, associate
agricultural representative
for Huron County said
Tuesday.
Corn and white beans are
showing excellent growth
after the three week dry
spell and most areas have
received adequate rain
during last week to bring on
the bean, corn and spring
grains.
Despite late seeding of
some corn and beans, the
warm weather of July en-
couraged rapid growth of
crops and the dry weather
resulted in some good cut
hay crops being harvested.

Construction began on
Rattenbury Street as 246
yards of large stone was
dumped to combat a bad
quicksand condition in the
block between Dinsley and
Gibbings Street. Fixing the
road -bed had made a won-
derful opportunity for both
town streets men, and the
PUC to get work done which
has been anticipated for
some time.

Civic holiday passed
quietly in Clinton. Some
residents went to the races in
Goderich; some went to the
lakeside; some bowled or
played golf and just put in
the day.
Misses Etheline O'Hearne
of Dublin and Miss Margaret
Groves of Goderich, both of
whom were successful in
obtaining honor standings as
graduates of the school of
commerce in June, have
accepted positions in
Toronto, Miss O'Hearne with
the Consumer's Gas Go., and
Miss Groves with Sir Donald
Mann.

The builders t St.
Joseph's church had a
narrow escape from meeting
with a serious accident on
Saturday afternoon last.
They were working in the
tower, which is ten feet or so
square, when at about 12 feet
from the ground the scaffold
broke and then went down in
a heap. It was a mixup of
men, mortar, bricks, tools
and scaffolding, but for-
tunately no one was very
much hurt.
At Monday night's meeting
of the town council Captain
McTaggart tendered his
resignation as Treasurer, a
position he has been filling in
the most satisfactory
manner for the past three
years. His resignation 'came
as a surprise for perfect
harmony' prevailed, but as
he had definitely decided the
matter, his resignation was
accepted to take affect the
31st day of this month. By the
way, the Treasurer received
a salary of $8.33 per month
and gives bonds to the extent
of $7,000.

Mr. J.C. Gilroy has a tree
in his garden that has two
kinds of fruits on it. On two
sides of the tree there are
plums and on the other two
sides there are apples
growing. The fruit is divided
into four divisions, first
plums and then apples.
Certain parties go to the
cemetery for no other
purpose than mischief. A
certain party had a fine rose
bush, which was fetched a
long distance, just to plant on
her child's grave. About two
weeks ago she went out to
see how it was getting on,
when it was in full bloom and
handsome. She went again
about a week following when
she found it was pulled up
from the roots and torn to
pieces. The lady says she
would not have minded so
much if they had only' taken
the flowers, but destroying
the tree was a shame and
should be stopped:
