(Shelley McPhee photo) ?I's Thellsaist' hoinehohl is all decorated for Christmas. In fact the cheery wreaths, pine cones and evergreen boughs were all in place by the first of December, but little can save the Christmas tree this year. The little old plastic tree just isn't up to parand it may never see the light cf day in 1902. The $9.9 tree has served me well, it's given me lots of joy and happiness over the years, but this season the tree has caused more trials than pleasure A college roommate and I bought the little tree, complete with decoratioHns and lights more than seven years ago at a Yonge Street Kresge's store. We did most of our Christ' mas shopping there and the merchandise and prices just ht the tall for two poor college lkids. The tree has seen a lot of travelling and shoving around. In the summer it was packed away vvith all the rest (*my school things in mum and dads basement In thefall and winter months it was toted back to 'Demote and jammed under the bed or stuffed m a closet with a ton of other needy items, including my tennis rackets pool cue, empty wine bottles, Robert Redford posters and a long red wig from an old Hallowe'en costume. it survived the years well and always brought us great joy at Christmas. It helped to keep us in big' h spirits Unough the December exams and brought some life to our dreary little apartment. My roommate and I were so proud of our tree. When even toothpaste and hamburg seemed too expenshe to buy, the tree was a real luxury item for college stadents Those twinadift lights and tinsel really got to us„ they kinked Ilk1;1111011.111milr stuck in the middle so pretty and bright They gave the place a homey look and we could never bear to stuff it under the bed again until themidelle of January. This year the tree doesn't look so goat My tastes are a little more sophistic' ated now I guess and that 12 - inch creation of green plastic just doesn't thrill me hke did seven years ago. Mod el its branches are broken off now and all those years of being squashed in a box has definitely duinged the all-round shape of the tree. Most of the tiny ornaments and balls are long gone and a few larger decorations are gigerly sitting on those weak branches My newly acquired white ceramic angels can't even hang Mthe tree this' year because the whole outfit topples over when anything heavier than a feather is pit on. This year pine owes and tissue paper have been jammed in around the base of thkree to give it some extra support and Iieit hours striegmg popcorn to fill in all those bare spots. The tree has been placed in the farthest corner of the room_ In daylight it still looks pretty bad„ but by night, with the little lights shining, itstill has a eke look. I have ambitions to buy a big Six - foster flocked tree next year and decorate it with white satin bows and handmade ornameds, just hie in the magazines But who knows,, Fm still pretty at- tached to that little Charlie Brown styled tree_ Ifs been with me a king time„ brings back lots of good memorks and will probably have some special place in the Hant house for a few more years to come_ 1 CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 161—PAGE 3 dies more than just selfrdefense Students learn much at 10 -week Holmesville Hall course By Shelley McPhee The lad five minutes of .the two-hour class followed a routine 3onmet1ing like this ruanitog on the spot; 200 stride jump; 50 push is; 20 leg raises; body rolls; five push ups; five sit ups; five body rolls; 10 push ups; stand up, sit dewn; stand up, sit down- take a breather. For two hours, on Mondays and Wednesdays for the past 10 weeks they have been studying to increase tholr physical endirance„ self-control and a self- confidence. It looks tough to an outsider, but ac- cording to Ron, a first degree black belt intruder, anyone can learn Marshall Arts, male or female„ yoimg or old_ Re uses himself as an example. A quiet, monstunine man, Ron began studying Marshall Arts nine years ago. He says that he lacked any self-confidence, bid after studying under John Pierson of London, he passed the varioustelts and now weals the < Mask belt. Only one in 2,000 reach that kvelt. There are eight more levels of black belt training that Ron can drive for, and more than 50 different styles of Marshall Ads, inducting the well-known Karate and Kung Foos that he could study_ Bonus cut.... • from page 1 municipalities in theprovince Many apply for job More than 40 people have applied for the full-time secretarial position at the Clinics Town Hall. Ccemcillor Cooke said she had been asked if a full-time employee was needed when other businesses were cutting back. Councillor Wayne Lester noted that he had investigated the situation and found, "the job requires a lot of paperwork. Same of Ws ridiculous and some of it's worthwhile, butt all has to be done" "They (the clerk's office) are respon- Mile to the provincial _government," Mayor Arehibakl added. Council will hire theperson and make an announcement later this month. Donations granted Council approved a donation request to the Chaim Early Childhood Education Centre. As last year, the council again - donated $200 to the graup. To help finance the Clinton ffinsmen Club's Centennial pace horse race, Clinton agreed todonate $750. Clerk Proctor acted that the town had budgeted for this and since 1973 the town has supported it. Very few people every reach the highest levels in Marshall Arts, but Ron says that for the beginner, the person who wants to tonenp, team some sell -defence and gain some confidence, his twice weekly classes at Holmesville can offer that. Marshall Arts styles are bestknown asa hands and feet method of fighting. The actual numb% of the word Karate is "empty hands," but according to Ron, the ancient Far Eastern art is not primarily used today to provoke or teach violence. Ron explained that anyone in his club who is caught fighting outside the confuses of the classroom is immediately suspended from the club. "Sell defence," he explained, "is knowing whenand when not to fight." The primary purpose in Marshall Arts Shurin-Ruy is to teach sell -confidence, perseveranceand self -vitro/ "Students are learning and doing things that they never thought they could do before. Some couldn't even do a push up and now they can do a hundred a night," Ron explained and added, "You only do as much as you can though. Some can do 10 push ups and some can do 100." Watching Ron instruct the club is amazing. He follows through the routines with the students but at the end, after the push ups, the kicks, the pmchs, the sit ups, the stride jumps and the running, he's not visibly tired, his breathing is slow and relaxed, aid there doesn't appear to be one drop of moisture on his forehead. "This is my night to loosen up and relax," be modestly explained. "I'll go house and really work out." He trains a least two hours a night for five nights a week, but noted that such a schedule is too tough on beginners, "Two nights a week is enough for them" More than 20 students, chldren and adults just completed the first filunrin-Ruy classes at Holmesville and Ron noted, "Some of the parents of the younger ones Can't believe some of the changes in their diildren. They can't pinpoint it, but they know the demge is forthe good." Sburin-Ruy is physically demand* and e*bllerating, it teaches the body Mel the mind, and it's an electing way to spent 10 weeks. Ron will begiming a new 10 -week program on the evening of Monday, January 4th at the Holmesville COM- munity Centre. For more details call Ron at 402-3634.
