Du Punt Canada, the manufacturers of Stren fishing
line, have come up with an idea to help you share your
knowledge with other fishermen- It's called the "Stren
Fishing Line Tip of the Week", and here is how it
works.
If you have a tip on a new technique, a new place to
fish, a great spot to catch perch or bass, or whatever,
jot it down on a piece of paper along with your name
and address, and send it to me ad this newspaper.
Each week we will select one of the entries, and run it
in this column so everyone can share your knowledge.
In return, I will submit your name to the Stren People,
and they will send you a free 200 meter spool of fishing
line in your choice of clear -blue or golden Stren line in
whichever pound test you desire. Be sure to make a
note of your line choice on the paper when you send in
your tip.
If you stop and think about it for a few minutes, it's a
super deal. Four or five tips could net you more than
one spool of line, and even enough for all your reels, a
spare for your tackle box and some for your friends as
well. Each tip must be on a separate sheet of paper,
however, as it may be necessary to pick and choose as
each week goes by. If your tip doesn't appear right
away, don't despair, as I only have room for one tip a
week and if I have several, I'll have to choose them in
order of originality and informativeness. Unfortunate-
ly, only those tips which are published will win a spool
of line.
Your hints should be two or three paragraphs long.
One liners and small books cannot be accepted. To give
you an idea of the kind of thing and length we're look-
ing for, I'm printing some hints from Stren in this col-
umn. They don't have to be as technical as this, just as
long as they're about fishing. Good luck, and get those
submissions coming in.
Tip No. 1
Solving the Problem
of Line Twist:
Several elements of your tackle, plus the way you
handle the crank on the reel, can put twist in monofila-
ment line. Fishing with a twisted line can hamper
casting and damage the line. With spinning gear, never
crank the reel when the fish is pulling line off the spool.
Every turn of the handle puts more twists in the line. If
your terminal tackle - lure, spoons or bait - spin when
the line is being retrieved, use a swivel which you're
sure turns freely. If you get twist in the leading end of
the line, raise the rod tip and let the dangling lure or
bait unwind the line. If the twist extends well up the
line, and you're fishing from a boat, remove all ter-
minal tackle and troll the line behind the boat for a few
minutes. Or, if you're on a stream bank, let the line pay
out downstream and the current will unwind those
kinks. If the line twist is so bad that these remedies
won't remove it, strip it off your reel and put on fresh
line.
Tip No. 2
Getting Rid of Line
Coil or Set:
That first cast after fishing gear has been unused for
a period of time can often result in snarls, birdsnests or
at best a series of stiff coils in the line. Monofilament
line which is reeled in wet, then dries on the reel, tends
to take a "set" in the position it is forced into. When
cast in this condition, the plastic memory of nylon
makes it try to return to this position. New line off a
spool will often present the same problem. Scientists at
Du Pont suggest soaking the line for an hour or more
before that first fishing trip. As it absorbs the
moisture, the line will relax and gain limpness. Put
your reel and line in a bucket of water or, if you're in a
boat, let the line pay off the reel and tow it on your way
to the fishing grounds. Tension can also remove these
coils. Tie the line to a tree or other stationary object.
Let the line off the reel as you back off about the
distance of a long cast. Use your rod to put strain on the
line, as though you were setting the hook- Apply this
tension, short of the breakpoint in the line, a dozen
times or more.

beware of thunderstorms
By Carolanne Doig
It's been a long time com-
ing but thunderstorm season
is back with us again. Some
of you may scoff at the idea
of golf being a dangerous
sport, and true enough, it's
not like car racing, skydiv-
ing, or many of the body con-
tact sports. Hbwever, golf
does have some dangerous
aspects. and lightning is by
far the most lethal. Each
summer we experience
several thunderstorms and
for experienced golfers it's
really second nature to take
the proper precautions in a
storm. However, for those of
you new to the garne and
those who just want to brush
up on the precautions, we'll
look at the problem again.
The Ontario Golf Association
treats the problem very
seriously and each year
sends us a poster to hang up
in the pro shop warning
about lightning on the golf
course.
Each summer deaths and in-
juries occur to people on the
golf course. Players, cad-
dies, and tournament
organizers are urged to take
every precaution for the pro-
tection of persons from
lightning. The main thing to
remember is to clear the
course before the storm is
near enough to be hazar-
dous. Being out in an open
space is bad enough but sw-
inging a golf club, or holding
up an umbrella adds to the
danger. It has been recogniz-
ed that wearing metal spiked
golf shoes does little to in-
crease the hazard.
Don't stay outside during
an electrical storm unless
necessary. Take shelter in
buildings, or vehicles. The
best places to seek shelter
are dwellings or other
buildings protected against
lightning, large metal frame
buildings, large unprotected
buildings, automobiles with
metal tops and bodies,
trailers with metal bodies.
When this is not possible
seek shelter in dense
woods... AVOID ISOLATED
TREES, depressed areas,
avoid hilltops and high
places, small unprotected
buildings, tents and shelters
in LOW places. AVOID UN-
PROTECTED BUILDINGS
AND SHELTERS IN HIGH
AREAS.
Some locations are the last
place you want to be in a
thunderstorm. AVOID

RAILROAD TRACKS,
ISOLATED TREES,
HILLTOPS, and in these
locations it is extremely
hazardous to be riding on
tractors, farm machinery,
golf carts, scooters or bikes.
When golfing, even in a
tournament, it's best to get
off the course at the first sign
of an electrical storm. The
Ontario Golf Association
wants players to know that
they have the right to stop
play if they think that lightn-
ing is a threat. This is right
in the rule book and the
player may discontinue play
even if the play has not of-
ficially been discontinued.
The OGA uses the following
signals and recommends
that all club committees
follow the same procedure:
DISCONTINUED PLAY:
THREE CONSECUTIVE
NOTES OF THE HORN,
REPEATED. RESUME
PLAY: ONE PROLONGED
NOTE OF THE HORN
REPEATED.
Thunderstorms are a part
of our summer just as golf is,
the thing to remember is
never to mix the two
together.
