Early files 5 years ages June 22, 1978 The business community of Clinton suffered another major loss on June 18 when the Livestock Sales Barn burned to the ground in a spectacular fire. The blaze caused an estimated $75,000 in damages. The Londesboro Lions staged a successful bike-a- thon last Saturday along a 14 mile route from Londesboro to Clinton and back. There were 65 riders in the tour, which raised money for community projects. 10 years ago June 21, 1973 Retiring Clinton Public School principal J.A. Gray was honored last Saturday at a special dinner organized to recognize his contribution to education in Clinton and Huron County. An estimated 300 spec- tators turned out Friday and Saturday evenings to the Hensall Community Centre to see and hear 45 fiddlers and 15 step dancers as they competed in the Ontario Fiddlers Contest held in Hensall over the weekend. 25 years ago June 19, 1958 Capacity attendance at Brucefield United Church last weekend marked the successful golden jubilee of the fine brick building. Dr. C.A. Mustard, BA, DD, Toronto, and a native of Brucefield, was the guest speaker, addressing the congregation at both mor- ning and evening services. According to the population figures presented by county council, Clinton remains the second largest municipality in the county, 2,490 people, an increase of :16 since last year. Goderich has 5,785 and Howick is next largest with 2.707 people. 50 Year :pro June 22, 1933 The Sybil Courtice Mission Band of Ontario Street Church held a garden party on the lawn at Mrs. George Murdoch's home on Saturday afternoon when a number attended to en- courage the young folk in their work. The proceeds go to further their missionary efforts. N ears ago June 18, 1908 Mr. Harry Salkeld, Goderich Township reeve, enters upon his 31st year today, but he would pass for 25 in any company. He is the youngest looking, if not the youngest man who has yet been elected to the reeveship of that township, but the shortage of years, if we may put it that way, is not these days considered a hardship. Reeve Salkeld is tactful and energetic, and at the time of writing unmarried. The White Dyke Band will pay at the garden party at S'orter's 11111 next Monday and at 1 ondesboro on July 1. Their leader, Mr. H. Cook, has bought a new baritone horn. 100 ears ago June 22. 1883 Last Friday about 25 families of Irish immigrants arrived 111 Clinton, being part of a very large number who had just landed from the r isle." ten I. le.
