There won't be a farmer's
market in Clinton this year.
A mandate send out to
Clinton businessmen
received a strong "nay"
response to the proposed
summer market.
Although a market was
scheduled to be held at the
grandstand, some mer-
chants still believed it would
operate in the downtown
area, which they s: id was an
ugly blemish on Clinton
streets. Last year the
market was situated on King
Street.
Ten days of hot, sunny, dry
weather has been thoroughly
enjoyed in Huron County by
most people, especially the
farmers.

Clinton council at a special
meeting cut the tax rate for
1973. The cut is believed to be
the first in over 20 years, but
means no curtailment of
planned street improvement
and street lighting
programs.
Residential, public school
supporters will have their
taxes cut by four mills or
about $8 for a $2,000
assessment.

Owner Orval Stanley and
manager Grant Irwin are
ready for their grand
opening sale at Stanley's
Meat Market. Although
small in size, the store will
display a wide variety of
frozen foods, quick meal
packages, fresh fruit and
vegetables and meats, fresh,
frozen and ready -cooked.
Goderich Township
council members are con-
sidering the advantages of
having all schools in the area
belonging to the Township
School Area. At the present
there are only six of the 10
schools belonging.

There was a severe storm
just before one o'clock on
Monday. The rain came in
sheets, the wind blew and the
hail beat down upon us
fiercely.
Apparently the storm had
its centre in the vicinity of
Stapleton and hardly any
rain fell except within a
radius of a few miles. But at
Stapleton and on Mr. Bert
Gibbings' farm, the full
furry was felt. 1t was a wild
storm around that quarter
for a few minutes.
George Connell of Varna
had a very successful bee
last week, hauling timber for
his barn, which he is building
this summer.

The silver trowel used by
the Right Reverand Mon-
signor Mounier on Sunday
last in laying a corner stone
of St. Joseph's Church was
furnished by Mr. W.R.
Counter, jeweler. It was very
handsomely engraved and
will be a much appreciated
addition to the Right
Reverand's collection of
trowels.
In Blyth invitations are out
for the marriage of Miss
Violetta Beatrice Thompson,
daughter of Mrs. Thompson
of Clinton to George E.
McTaggart of this village.
The bride is the charming
and popular Clintonian with
a host of friends, while the
groom is the efficient Grand
Trunk agent in Blyth.
The people of East
Wawanosh were surprised to
hear of the sudden death of
Fanny Robinson, wife of Mr.
John H. Mills, who died on
Friday after suffering from
paralysis for 30 hours,
during which time a child
was born and is still living.

Mr. W. Cottier is engaged
in making new suits for the
town Fire Company. They
will be trimmed with gilt
bands, and will enable the
company to make a fine
appearance.
One morning recently at
four o'clock, the mayor of
Clinton was summoned out
of bed by a hearty rap at his
door, and going down to
ascertain the cause of such
an untimely visit, he found
several ratepayers who
reside below the station, who
complained of a nuisance in
the shape of a foul smell and
they wanted it abated. After
shivering till his teeth
chattered and promising to
have'the matter looked into,
he was allowed to return to
his couch. (The parties have
since been consulting a
lawyer, to see if some means
cannot be used to prevent the
deposition of night -soil,
which is the cause of the
trouble.)
