Everyone has a favorite
color. This summer peat that
hue to work with a one -color
flower garden Nothing is
monotonous about a
monochromatic floral
display.
By selecting different
flowers of the same color
farruly and arranging thein
by height and foliage tex-
tures, a favorite color takes
on new excitement. Most
flower colors come in a wide
range of shades, from dark
to light, and varying hues in
between. Rose, for example,
can be found in subtly -
colored petunias or
begonias, and also, in the
vivid zinnia, Wild Cherry or
rich geranium, Deep Rose
Flash. Careful selection can
create the same single -color
effect in shades of blue,
yellow, white, pink and cor-
a1.
To create a
monochromatic bed in your
garden, select your favorite
color and then begin thinking
about different plants
available in this shade. A
Nue garden could include
petunias, ageratum, pan-
sies, salvia, verbena and
delphinium. The larger your
bed, the greater the number
of different flowers and color
shades which can be accom-
modated attractively.
Smaller beds will be more
attractive with fewer color
and plant difference.
Height differences add
another dimension to
creating a single -color spec-
tacular. Rather than lining
up your plants with the
tallest in the back, place tall
one
varieties in the center, and
plan a gradual height
decrease to the small border
flowers. That way the bed is
beautiful from all angles.

most lawns, one kilogram of

plant a garden
Colorful bedding plants such as marigolds, petunias and salvia give a structured terrace
with permanent plantings of evergreen and deciduous woody plants a well-dressed look
for summer.

Your vacation plans are
almost complete. You are
wondering what to do with
the houseplants you've
pampered all year.
Burke McNeill, Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food extension hor-
ticulturist, says there are a
number of solutions to your
plant sitting problems.
The best solution is to find
an accommodating neighbor
to water the plants while you
are away. If you are for-
tunate enough to find such a
plant sitter, leave watering
instructions, especially if the
person is inexperienced with
plants.

he says.
Another solution is to put
the plants in about two in-
ches of water in the bathtub
or kitchen sink. If there is no
natural light in the room it is
advisable to leave a light on.
Using this method, Mr.
McNeill says plants can
survive for about two weeks.
You can also make your
own automatic watering
system using clear plastic
bags. First water the plants
thoroughly and insert two
stakes, slightly taller than
the plant, into each pot. Put
the bag over the top of the
plant and fasten to the pot
rim with a rubber band. This
will allow water condensing
inside the bag to drain into
the soil.
Mr. McNeill says once in
the bags, the plants should
be set in a cool spot away
from direct sunlight. This
will provide an ideal en-
vironment for houseplants
for about two weeks.
However, this method is not
recommended for soft
plants, such as fibrous
begonias. This type of plant
may rot because of excess
moisture.
For longer vacations,
there are several automatic
watering devices available
at garden centers and other
plant outlets. In some of
Ontario's larger centers,
professional plant sitters are
available for hire
