Power lawn mower repair and safety is essential for your
pleasant gardening chores. The Ontario Safety League
urges t, i, wer mower owners to take special care of their
machines.
Winne power lawn mowers
have removed much of the
dreaded work that used to
result in blustered hands,
sore and tired muscles, they
also hold certain dangers.
Each year, thousands of
Canadians are injured by
these labor-savuag machines
mainly because of
carelessness and misuse.
The rotary mower can hurl
a piece of wood, metal or
stone sti„ i feet or further, at a
speed of 200 miles per hour.
For the unwary and unin-
formed user, these machines
can, and often do, cut off toes
and fingers. Depending on
whether they are gas or elec-
tric powered, they can pre-
sent a serious fire or shock
hazard.
The Ontario Safety League
urges power mower owners
to read the instruction
manual carefully and get to
know the machine
thoroughly. Before cleaning,
adjusting or servicing be
sure to stop the engine and
disconnect the spark plug
wire on gasoline powered
engines and unplug the
power cord on electrically
powered machines. Follow
the manufacturers in-
structions for maintenance
Adventure, but don't
Remember the first
season you became confi-
dent enough to adventure
with new gardening techni-
ques end brand new
varieties? Then, by ex-
perience, you've discovered
there's a fine line between
being adventurous and being
foolhardy.
Foolhardy gardeners fall
for sucker advertisements,
or for seeds and plants that
promise unbelievable advan-
tages. Adventurous
gardeners read ads and
labels very carefully and ask
questions of their local Coun-
ty Agricultiit-al Agent. They
seldom choose a flower or
vegetable that doesn't grow
well for them.
repair
to the letter; built in safety
arrangements are effective
only if maintained.
Never add fuel while the
engine ds running or still hot
from use. With electrically
powered motors be sure that
the power cord is in good
condition and properly
grounded.
When operating your
power mower, keep all
bystanders oast of the work-
ing area and examine the
area for stones, sticks and
other obstructions before
starting the machine. Wear
closed leather shoes ( or safe-
ty shoes), and push - don't
pull the machine. On steep
slopes, operate from side to
side ) vertical operation in-
vites trouble). Work nn
daylight hours only and
never on wet grass. Stop the
motor when the mower is
unattended even for a mo-
ment.
Power mowers should only
be operated by adults or
responsible teenagers.
Children who lack the
physical ability, experience
and judgement to operate
these machines safely are
far too often injured by
them. Keep them from hap-
pening to your family.
vite failure
It's always a good idea to
ask your local garden centre
to help you select the newest
and best varieties. They see
previews of the new
varieties and can tel you if
they will grow well in your
garden. Don't be timid; ask-
ing questions sure beats
looking at a botanical turkey
in your garden and asking,
"Now, why on earth did I
plant that?"
Prune Hedge
Always prune a hedge so
that the base is wider than
the top. This allows light to
reach the lower branches
and produces a hedge that is
full to the base.
