lany When choosing vegetables to grow, consider the size of garden, family preference, and the garden location. Withgood planning, the yield of the average family garden can be doubled, says Dr. H. Tiessen of the University of Guelph's, department of hor- ticultural science. When selecting a garden site, choose the area with the most sunlight, good drainage, and good soil. In small gardens, soil condi- tions can !e improved by ad- ding topsoil, peat, manure, sand or artificial medium. Small areas with better en- vironmental conditions can produce higher yields than larger, shaded, and poorly - drained areas. A minimum of six hours of sunlight each day is necessary. If the only sunny areas are patios or open driveways, plants can be grown in boxes of 30 cen- timetres to 45 centimetres (12 inches to 15 inches) of topsoil. In a small garden, only one or two vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers and radishes, should be grown. ur gard A v oid space -consuming crops, such as squash, melons, cucumbers and potatoes. Concentrate only on crops which respond to in- tensive cultivation, he says. o increase' yiel Choose space -saving crops, such as carrots, beets, onions, radishes, and let- tuce. After one crop is harvested, another can be planted in its place. Continuous cropping of tomatoes and pep±a-, rs is desirable. In a small sunny area grow two or four plants of slicing cucumber on a trellis. Perennials, such as asparagus, rhubarb and chives, can be grown in the perennial flower borders. Through proper selection of vegetables, intensive cultivation, and proper management, it is possible to harvest quite a large volume of vegetables from a small growing area. Home gardeners who are not sauerkraut makers often find 6 or 8 cabbages at one time a little more than the palate or refrigerator can bear. 'All -Seasons Cabbage Mix,' now available at garden centers and greenhouses as started plants, may be the answer to the cabbage problem. This new introduction from the Ball Seed Company is a formula mixture of three Fl hybrid varieties, which will produce solid, healthy heads early, mid-season and late. Cabbage from the garden has a fresh quality totally different from the store - purchased varieties. The strong taste, often associated with cabbage, is not present in freshly picked garden produce. Gardeners who have given up cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprout production because of cabbage worms are en- couraged to try these crops again. Since the develop- ment of the safe, biologic control, Bacillus thuringiensis, the pesky cabbage looper can be kept at bay with no threat to health or environment.
