Why settle for just lettuce,
radishes, tomatoes? How
boring! Have you ever ex-
perimented with growing
chervil, sorrel, Chinese cab-
bage, endive, chives and
tender mustard greens for
salads?
There will come those hot
summer evenings when the
idea of cooking supper will
turn you off completely.
Remedy: wander about your
garden, picking and pulling
a colander full of greens and
herbs.
It will give you a salad bet-
ter than the best you've
tasted in fine restaurants.
Heavenly! It will sooth your
stomach and your jangled
nerves, and replenish your
body's store of vitamins.
If you are, indeed, what
you eat, wouldn't eating in-
teresting salads make you a
more interesting person?

Love yiu
Vining cucumbers love the
warts, w ll -drained con-
ditions provided by large
containers such as bushel
baskets, half barrels and 7 -
gallon for: tubs. Standard -
vine cucumber pis-nts are
march too robust and greedy
to flourish in smaller
containers.
Containers shop id be filled
with an artificial soil pur-
chased ready -trade or
blended from equal volumes
of coarse peat moss or sifted
compost, builders sand and
steam pasteurized, weed -
free manure. If you garden

er, containerize i
where weight is a factor,
substitute lightweight perlite
or vermiculite for the sand.
Seven -gallon capacity
containers can sup r rt three
to five cucumber vines. As a
rule of thumb, space vines 9
to 12 inches apart. Plant
seeds two inches in from the
rim. Thicker planting may
stunt the vines and reduce
the yield of fruit.
Set the containers on three
ft. -high stands, if possible.
This will give vines room to
trail freely and to produce to
their full potential. Vines to
containers set at floor level
can be tip -pruned to make
these branch and stay within
bounds.
Dwarf cucumbers should
not be planted in large
containers. Their restricted
root system tends to be
swamped by excess
moisture held in deep con-
tainers. Standard vanes have
more foliage and pull so
heavily on root -zone
moisture that waterlogging
is seldom a problem.

ouble duty
the garden
The vegetable garden area
can do double and triple duty
during the growing season
by planting early vegetables
as soon as the ground can be
prepared. Beets, carrots,
onions, lettuce, spinach and
green peas can be sown ear-
ly in the spring to mature in
May and June. With the
maturity of these early
_ vegetables warm summer
crops can be planted in their
place to take advantage of
the hot summer sun for a se-
cond crop in the same area
of the garden.

tint. Uses for these tiny
beauties include small pots,
window boxes and small in -
ground planting areas. The
Playboy series would also be
ideal for border displays,
with taller annuals behind
them.
White geraniums used to
be rarities. The fine new
hybrids from seed have in-
creased the availability of
this unusual geranium color.
Seed vigor also brings more
blooms as a planting of
hybrid Ice Queen will in-
dicate.
Plenty of hybrid
geraniums are available,
even in red, for this garden-
ing season. These seed -
started bloomers are more
than just interesting. They
easily out -perform their
traditionally propagated
cousins.
