It will likely be 1990 before the system is worked out. However, if you have a lit- tle "earthly space" that gets plenty of sunshine such as a veranda, an apartment balcony, a bay window or a skylight, you could grow potatoes in a pot, says Sam Squire, extension hor- ticulturist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Alliston. You'll need the following items from your local hard- ware store or garden centre: - a flower pot - 20 cen- timetres to 30 centimetres ( eight inches to 12 inches) in diameter and at least 25 cm (10 in.) deep, with drainage holes and a tray in which to set it. - potting soil and ver- miculite - mixed in a ratio of three litres (three quarts) potting soil to one L ( one qt. vermiculite, and half fill the pot with this mixture. - seed potato - one whole seed potato (do not use regular tablestock) four em to five cm (1-11/2 in. to two in.) in diameter and set it on the soil in the centre of the pot. Suspend three of these?) cm (12 in. I square pieces perpendicular to the plant at 25 cm, 50 cm, and 75 cm (10 in., 20 in., 30 tn. ) heights above the pot. The foliage will grow through the grids and support itself. Enjoy the green foliage, the bloom and after the plant yellows and matures, the tubers. Chances are the tubers will cost $2 per 500 grams ($2 per pound) to pro- duce, but money isn't everything. You will have the experience of producing one of nature's finest foods in your own home. :.lrcit trees blend well hi most landscapes, but they require special care to keep thein at their best. To extend the tree's life span, plaint in well -dried locations, water well during drought period and fertilize regularly each spring. Double -digging is a less strenuous way It must be muscular young people who advocate strenuous gardening. They extoll the virtues of double digging, for example, turn- ing your garden soil over to a depth of 18 inches. They ap- parently don't realize that many gardeners are at an age where such athletic endeavors are unappealing, if not downright dangerous to life and Limb. Ruth Stout, who gardened to a great age, proved con- clusively that you don't have to dig at all, much less 18 in- ches deep. She simply piled on more straw mulch every year and let the earthworms dig the soil for her. If you are short on energy or brute power, there are ex- cellent alternatives to the physical approaches to soil preparation. Just go to the library and read up on the way experienced organic gardeners go about it. Double -digging can work, but so can less strenuous ap- proaches.
