150th anniversary meeting
to beheld for township

For the 150th Anniversary
of Goderich Township, a
meeting will be held April 28
at 8 p.m. at the Community
Centre in Holr,esville. It's
an open meeting for any
resident of the township or
past residents or interested
persons who have some
ideas for up -coming celebra-
tion 1985.
Seniors meet
The Enterprising Seniors
met last Thursday in the
Community Centre in
Holmesville. The opening
exercises were held with
Jean Lobb at the piano.
Everett Mcllwain chaired
the meeting.
Charlotte Norman read the
minutes. Blanche Deeves
gave her card reportsending
one card to Murray
McDougall. Frank Yeo gave
the financial statement.
Everett Mcllwain gave a
reading. A committee of
Hazel -,„_,Mc.Greath, Jean
Perdue will get a program
ready for the meeting with
guest club Dungannon. Hilda
Semple, Irene Cudmore and
Effie Yeo will be in charge of
the lunch .
Hazel McCreath discussed
making a name quilt. Mrs.
Semple made the motion to
do so. This will be completed
for 1985 celebration of the
Township names to be 25
cents each. Tickets will be
made and sold later.
Blanche Deeves will
organize a bus trip for the
Seniors in June. Mary
Sterling gave a reading.
John and Hilda Semple
presented their slides of
their recent trip to England
and Everett Mcllwain
thanked them. A parcel was
passed around for everyone
to guess the contents won by
Violet Stirling and Grace
Walter.
At the worship service
Sunday morning at the
Holmesville United Church,
four young girls Nancy Lobb,
Heather Lobb, Stacey
Haines and Kristin Crawford
sang. Hugh Lobb was the
director. The minister Rev.
Bechtel told the children
about Fishing and for them
to always tell the truth and
be a Christian. Harold Jantzi
and Chester Sturdy received
the offering.
The Youth Fellowship
group will hold a fish derby.
Pledge sheets are available
at the Church.

Shannon Preszcatoropened
the meeting with the 4-H
•pledge. Nina read the
minutes and gave our
treasurer's report. We then
discussed what to do for our
display. We are having
another meeting to set up
this display.
After we finished planning
Linda cooked two pizzas and
everyone enjoyed their very
much. I feel that we should
thank Linda Mustard and
Phyllis Coulter for being our
leaders and our moms for
taking us to our meetings
and just being them-

Goderich Township
council report
Accounts totalling more
than $110,000 were ordered
paid . when Goderich
Township Council met in
regular session April 18. Of
this amount, $100,000 was for
Huron County Board of
Education taxes and $7,000
was for road superintendent
payroll.
1)an ('lark was present at
the meeting to enquire into
zoning regulations in force in
the township. No motions
were recorded regarding
this.
John Oskam was present
to explain his desire to erect
a hog barn. Council referred
him to the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food for
more particulars on M.D.S.
measurements.
Building permits were
issued to David Bartlett for a
guest house on lot 16, con-
cession 15; to Don Middleton
to demolish a barn on lot 41,
concession 10; to Frank
Graham for a house porch on
lot 14, Maitland Concession;
and to Seranus Martin for a
new barn on lot 72, Maitland
Concession.
A building permit
requested by William
Desjardine for a new house
on lot 21, Maitland Con-
cession was approved but
held pending septic tank
approval.
Council decided to pur-
chase a Vicon C M 205 mower
for roadwork from Vincent
at a price of $3,924.80.
Tenders had been received
from Vincent, Radford and
McGavin with Vincent's
being the lowest.
Council then adjourned
until May 2 at 8 p.m.

there was the Mixed Doubles
playoff. Due to a tie, there

Riddell presents plaque to couple

ray on Sunday to con-
gratulate them on their
Golden Wedding Anrrriver-
sary. Among those who call-
ed was a wedding guest 50
years ago, Mrs. Baillie, who
is in her 92nd year, and Jim's
foster sister from Corunna.
Mrs. Hazel Clifford of Clin-
ton, another wedding guest
and a cousin of Madeline's
brought them a card with
pictures of them when they
first met ui 1930. Everyone
present had a good laugh at
the style of their clothes,
which was very "in" at the
time.
The dining room table was
centred with a three-tier
cake presented to them by
Jim and Margaret Wasson.
Jun -Wasson was Jim's first
friend when he came to
Canada.
Jack Riddell presented
thein with a plaque from the
province, and letters were
received from Governor
General Shreyer and Prune
Minister Trudeau. Cards
came from as far away as
England. "Flabbergasted„
was the way Madeline
described their reaction to
all the attention they receiv-
ed.
Over 60 people sampled a
variety of luscious desserts
at the Varna U.C.W 'S
dessert euchre last Wednes-
day afternoon, and enjoyed
the card games. High prize
went to Mary Broadfuot and
low prize to Elva Webster.
Irene Whitmore had the
inost lone hands. A large
selection of door prizes were
won by Mary Chessell,
Madeline Rathwell, Mabel
Reid, Mrs. Alexander, Edith
Landsborough Janet
Webster, Irene Whitmore,
Ina Neeb, Eileen Consitt, An-
nie Finkbeiner, Willa
Taylor, Susie Pollock, Jean
McEwen, Mabel McClin-
chey, Margaret Dawson and
Mrs. Russell Jervis. There
was a large offering of bak-
mg sold after the card party.
A fancily night for people
of all ages is being held at
the township hall on Friday
night Margaret Robinson
will tell of her experiences in
Indonesia last summer, ac-
companied by pictures and a
display of articles from
there. Also on the program is
John Kalbfleisch with his
prize-wuining speech "How
to Survive a Nuclear War in
Varna'' John's speech is at 8
p.m., so better be there m
good tune. Ladies are asked
to bring lunch.
Ball practices are begrnn-
ing shortly There has been
an excellent response to
registration. There's quite a
collection of hats, jackets
and sweaters in the booth at
the ball park. Any that are
not claimed shortly after the
beginning of the ball season
will be taken to a mission.

awards for long service with
Varna Lodge 1035, the names
