Clinton News-Record, 1983-03-09, Page 5b ek 5 reit 9, 1978 The &ea haa s;:B:fered through one of the cold t winters since the 19308, but because there were no major mai, little wind and many sunny days, few people noticed the cold. In the last six weeks the temperature has fallen below the Fahrenheit nranark on 20 days, and has n' . been above freezing since Jan. 26, or 41 consecutive days. The Huron County Board of Education has decided that March secondary school examinations will be can- celled in an effort to make up lost school time caused by the teachers' strike. While the schools are still closed, at CHSS studies haven't stopped. Bill Murphy and Scott Doherty, Grade 13 students, have organized classes at Wesley Willis Church. More than 30 Grade 13 students are expected to attend. CLINTON \ ' 1 W" : I►'AY. MARCH 9. 1 WS 10 Years Ago March 10, 1973 A new post office will be built in Bayfield under a $29,970 contract awarded to a Seaforth firm, Smithe Construction. Brought forward at this time to increase em- ployment opportunities in the area, the project will be completed in May 1973. CHSS students received a surprise visit from Premier Bill Davis last Thursday when the premier came to Clinton en route to Exeter. 25 Years Ago March 6, 1958 Judge Frank Fingland threw a curling stone down the ice on Feb. 27 to mark the official opening of a new, four -sheet curling rink at RCAF Station Clinton. Increased bread prices may be on the way. At least one large bread firm in Toronto has announced a rise from 21 to 22 cents for its 24 -ounce loaf and it is possible that other firms may follow suit. 50 Years Ago March 10, 1932 W! :.Bt seems to be urgently needed nan Clinton at the present time is some public- spirited citizen to come forward and offer a sub- stantial sum to assist in erecting a much needed addition to the Public Hospital Funds which have been in hand for an elevator for some time but this ac- commodation cannot be installed until an addition is built as there is no room for it. The Lindbergh baby is still missing and it is now over a week since it was taken from its crib in its own nursery. Many clues but they have lead to nowhere. 75 Ye rs Ago March 5, 1908 The Auburn contigent of snowfirghters on the CPR were as far as Guelph on Monday. The knitting factory is one of Clinton's most progressive industries. A little over two years ago the wheels began to move and now the plant is complete and modern, in- cluding 60 knitting machines. They are the most up-to-date money can buy. There are now 65 people on their pay roll and for some time past the industry has been running overtime. This fad is most unusual in this period of depression and it is pleasing to be able to note it. 100 Years Ago March 9, 1883 In Colborne Township we cannot boast of enjoying as many oyster suppers, kissing parties or charades as our friends in Goderich Township, but we do know that our young men handle more wood at sawing bees. The temporary bridge across the river at Holmesville is holding out well. The ice, we believe, is as firm some places as any time during winter. On Friday afternoon, just as the 3.50 train was leaving the station, a lady caught the railing of one of the cars and attempted to get on. She missed her footing, and was dragged some distance before she was relieved from her dangerous position. People should know better than to get on a train when in motion. A traveller who counted the pitch holes on one of the roads near here. for 14ka miles said there was exactly 124, this shows the road to have been nearly all hole. -PAGE Frites ;I ,, c acct tllrl!
