At a meeting of the Coun-
cil, the College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Ontario re-
affirmed its belief that out -of.
hospital births should be
ri 'scouraged because of the
ads'tonal risks to the health
of the mother and ;r :.1 by.
It is recognized that some
women may wish to ::ve
their children at home. The
College would emphasize the
importance of being well in-
formed of the complications
which may arise during
pregnancy and c '.ldbir h in
making such a decision.
Experience has shown that
many of the complications
are unpredictable, and can
only be managed effectively
and safely in a hospital.
Even in those countries
which have developed back-
up services, the rate of com-
plications for women
selected as suitable for a
home delivery is
substantially higher than for
deliveries in hospital. it is
also worth noting that the
number of home deliveries
in both the United Kingdom
and Holland has steas!;ly
declined over the past three
decades. In the United
Kingdom, the num'. . r of
home births has fallen from
34 percent to less than 2 per-
cent of all births.
It is the responsibility of
the attending physician to
adequately inform patients
of the increased risks
associated with out - of -
hospital births. In addition,
particular attention should
be given to any conditions
with regard to the mother's
health, or physical condition
which could affect the
pregnancy or the delivery.
Patients should not expect
a physician to provide
obstetrical care under condi-
tions which make it impossi-
ble to maintain the standard
of practice of the profession.
