And, that time inevitably
comes to all young couples
who are in love and thinking
of purchasing that very ian-
rtant diamond rung as a
symbol of their love, reports
the Jewelry Industry Coun-
cil.
Time was when the
parents of today's young
couples went through the
same experience in a not -
too -different fashion.
In 1956, the average young

Guidelines for e
groom
Now, a quarter of a cen-
tury later, the average
engagement diamond costs
about or more, and to-
day's young man should plan
to spend a • of two months'
salary on the rung for his in-
tended bride.
In these inflated times, the
diamond is a bargain for,
compared to what has hap-
pened to rents and the price
of automobiles, the diamond
has more than retained its
value.
Ask Dad how much a
typical Saturday aright date
with Morn at the movies
cost. Chances are, for a 10
dollar bi I ! he could take ;i. _oaf
to a first -run movie, fill his
gas tank, and have enough
money left over for ham-
burgers and malteds at the
drive-in. The same date to-
day would cost two and a
half times as much.
Alas, the prices of 1`,,, are
long past, but Mom's dia-
mond engagement ring has
appreciated in value much
more than its original cost —
and that doesn't even con-
sider its sentimental value!

Jacqueline Kennedy

And, when Mariana

Although wedding protocol
has become more relaxed
over the years, and styles
in wedding dresses now
range from formal to casual,
cultured pearls are still con-
sidered the most appropriate
jewels for a bride to wear.
The question is, what style
of pearl necklace will look
ito
best with a particular bridal
dress?
• The choker is the shortest
cultured pearl necklace,
about 15" long. It falls to just
above the collar bone, and is
traditionally worn with a
high round neckline, but is
also appropriate with a
scooped neckline.
• The princess length is 18"
long and falls just below a
turtleneck collar. This
odea for couples to enlist the
aid of their favorite jeweler
where they want to panrchase
one.
Since most persons are not
geaanologists, or authorities
on diamonds, having an ex -
rt as a guide is a good
idea.
Your jeweler can interpret
the worth of the diamond you
choose based on its coloring,
how it is cut, its freedom
from imperfections and its
carat weight.

scooped neckline.
The matinee necklace, 20"
to 24" long, falls halfway
between the neckline and
bosom. This length is lovely
with a high -standing collar,
as well as with round or
scooped -neck collars.
•The o,u:'ra length is 28" to
30", falling just past the
bosom. An elegant look it is
most appropriate with high -
standing collars.
