NEXT! Maxine Durum and Jessie Naylor spent many hours last Wednesday stitching and visiting while the Auburn UCW quilted and tied nine quilts at a day -long bee. The crib quilt, being completed here, will be sent to a home for unwed mothers. Other quilts will also go to needy oups and individuals. (Shelley McPhee photo) J UCWcompletes nine guilts Auburn Silver Tops held a dinner last Wednesday, prepared by Mrs. Tom Hag- gitt, Mrs. Lillian Letherland, Mrs. Eleanor Bradnock and Mrs. Ross Robinson. Films were shown by Ross Robinson and Elliott Lapp. The next dinner will be held February 16 with Mrs. Tom JarF:;n, Mrs. Frank Raithby and Mrs. Art Lefebre on the committee. Nine quilts finished last Wednesday at Knox United Church - seven of them tied, were done by about 20 members of the U.C.W. There are three more to be done next week. Vestry meeting The congregation of St. Mark's Anglican Church held their annual Vestry meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cartwright last Thursday evening. Rev. William Craven was chairman and the minutes and correspondence was read by the Vestry clerk, Mrs. Tom Haggitt. Mrs. obert Slater gave the year's financial statement. Plans were made to observe the 100th anniver- sary on the first weekend in July. took place. The second annual Skate- A-Thon was set for February 12 with a storm date set for February 19th. Pledge sheets can be picked up at the home of Mrs. Elaine Craig as soon as possible. There will be two divisions -Juniors -8 years and under and Seniors -9 years and over. The juniors will skate from 9:30 am to 1:30 and the seniors will skate from 1:30 to 5:30 pm. Mrs. Brenda Powell will put posters up around the village. The prize money for the skaters with most money brought in was set at $20, $10 and $5. Members agreed to each make three dozen cookies for the snack breaks for the skaters. The proceeds will go again to the Auburn playground. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Elaine Craig on February 15 at 8 p.m. People report Mrs. Jack Armstrong, Mrs. Kenneth McDougall, Mrs. Tina Empey and Mrs. Peter Verbeek attended the Huron Presbyterial UCW meeting in Seaforth last Monday. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. James Towe of Blyth on their 58th wedding anniver- sary. Mr. and Mrs. Towe us- ed to reside near Auburn before going to the Queen's Villa at Blyth. Mr. Jack Armstrong was a patient last week in St. Joseph's Hospital, London where he underwent surgery. We wish him a speedy recovery. Walkerburns meet The Walkerburn Club met at Mrs. Elliott Lapp's home on January 25. There was a discussion about a celebration of the Club's 65th anniversary to be held in 1984. Mrs. Leonard Archamba It suggested that the members " make a' skate -a -thou signature quilt. This was left open for future ideas and didcusslon. Collecuun for the Foster Child and the birthday money was collected by little Cheryl Kun Lapp. The draw prize donated by Mrs. Terry Rutledge was won by Mrs. Archambault. Mrs. Keith Lapp will hold the February meeting at her home. An auction sale of baked goods and crafts was held with Mrs. Archambault as the auctioneer. Auburn UCW A quilting and tying bee with lunch was held at Knox United Church un January 25. Mrs. Peter Verbeek was the chairman for the worship on World Outreach and Mis- sions. A panel discussion was led by Mrs. Gerald McDowell, Mrs. Ernest Durnin and Mrs. Peter Verbeek. Discussion showed some objection to the Playboy Pay TV programm- ing. Mrs. Oliver Anderson read a letter from U.S.C. They will be having a hand- work and craft sale to raise money and it was decided to see if a quilt would be accep- ta ble. Mrs. Ernest Durnin was asked to inquire to the Children's Aid Society and Salvation Army regarding needs for clothing. It was moved by Mrs. Lawrence Plaetzer, seconded by Mrs. Kenneth McDougall that a layette be sent to The Home for Unwed Mothers. It will be ready by March 15. Due to the liberal memorial donation made by Mrs. Plaetzer for the pur- chase of a gas oven a discus- sion came up on the stoves and ovens. On motion of Mrs. Kenneth McDougall and Mrs. Donald Haines, it was decided that the kitchen committee should buy an oven or stove. The an- nual church meeting will be held on February 6 and Unit 2 will be in charge of lunch. Rev. Bonny Smith asked the U.C.W. be responsible for a church service in February. World Outreach asked if the UCW would sponsor a child for camp. It was agreed to leave ap- proval until a later date. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Sproul of Mississauga spent the weekend with Mrs- Marion Sproul, William and Kenneth Sproul, R.R.3 Auburn. CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 2, 1983 PAtift Citizensh i the January meeting of the Auburn Women's Institute was held last Tuesday with the president Mrs. Kenneth McDougall in charge. The minutes were read by the secretary Mrs. Robert Peck. The linen tableclothes that had been purchased many years ago were sold for $10. each. Those purchasing them were Mrs. Donald Haines, Mrs. Gordon Chainney and Mrs. Eleanor Bradnock. A letter of thanks was read from the Salvation Array for a donation sent at Christ- mas. Some expressed the wish to attend the meeting at Seaforth on January 31st on Setting goals and objectives for your organization. Mrs. McDougall will find out more particulars. A letter from the Hullett Township Recreation was turned over to the Booster Club members. Mrs. Peck read a letter from Bolder, England from the W.I. Branch there which she corresponds with. Mrs. Elizabeth Hill had written the letter. The card report was given by Mrs. Lillian Letherland and she read the thank -you notes. Twenty-five dollars was sent to the Children's Memorial Hospital and a request was for make finger puppets. It is hoped that some volunteers will be found to help cheer up the little patients there. Mrs. Frank Raithby reported that she is sending some more labels soon. Mrs. Bradnock reported on coming events of the A.C.W.W. and Area W.I.'s and read a letter from Mrs. Janet Hiepleh, the provincial president. Mrs. Tom Jardin is making a quilt to go to A.C.W.W. meeting in British Columbia in June. Janice Daer and a delega- tion from the Leu Club asked to do painting around the hall. The board agreed to give them some work. Water rentals will remain the same but a 5 five percent increase will be given to the caretaker and the secretary -treasurer.
