This young lady abandoned her apple as her eye spotted something that she wanted to get her hands , on from the large assortment of articles for sale . at the Have you wondered, being a woman, justwhere you stand concerning legil matters? Last `Wednesday Mr. /I. Egener, one of the well kr. wn lawyers in Goderich, came to Women's_ Day Out and an- swered many - questions dealing with women's rights in the law. . They first took a look at the history of the land system.,, The Janda• system was originally based 'on the one used in England 100 years ago. Ariy farm lands owned by the father were automatically' passed on to the son and the women were never mentioned in the transactions. ' If the husband died his wife would be allowed to live on the land for the rest of her life but it would be owned by their son. Twenty to thirty years ago there were no women's names on deeds in the registry office. Now, times are changing. 'Women ar.e now able to take out mor- tgages, loans and Credit cards on their own. In Ontario, there is a provision in the, taw called Dower Rights.. This means, if a married man owns , any property his h " wife automatically would be en- - titled to one-third of the property value. If the husband should want to sell the property, his wife would also have to sign off on the deed.,Men have no similar rights should the wife pur- chase property. There were several questions asked about wills and why women should have them. If a husband should die without leaving a will the wife gets the first $50,000. The rest iS then divided between her and their children. M It sounds like a lot of money but today, with life insuran' e and the value of real estate, it doesn't take long to add. up. On December 3 WDO will Many people have over that be taking, a Cruise on the amount without reap?ing it. She would have to make an application to the Supreme ,Court of Canada for permission and it could take a long time to settle. ' ` A will is written up in a way 'to protect the children should , anything happen to both parents, also including names of guardians for them. If the husband should leave the wife out of the will or she feels she has not been provided for adequately she .scan make an application 'to the courts under the Dependants Relief Act. The court usually awards Monthly amount which subject to ;cost of living creases. a is in There is also no inheritance tax on any assets which are under $250,000. All wills should be revised and kept up to date through, tife years. What happensif a husband, after a divorce, decides not to keep paying the settlements awarded by the court? The courts keep track of all payments made. If they should stop the courts' could put'the husband in jail. It, is unfortunate that children are involved in separations and .divorces and often used as weapons. With -the equalization of wages between men and women the courts, are now becoming more concerned with the children's welfare in separation cases. Child support depends on the husband's income and can he revised through the years as the cost of living increases. ,• The ladies also learned that it'doesn't matter who is the first to walk out of ,the marriage. The wife is shill entitled to support and set- tlemert of properties. Want ir send Christmas Gift But Can Not? 'Say it with flowers! We can have flowers sent anywhere i for you promptly.
