Glaucoma leading caue
of blindness in Canada
Glaucoma is a leading
cause of .blindness in Canada,
tated in a report from the
Canadian Institute For The
Blind. This eye disease was
responsible for -10 percent of
a1-1 cases of :blindness last
year. It need not have been as
glaucoma can be detected by
a simple test and, in most
cases, can be treated with
medication or surgery. •
In order to detect 'this
disease, a glaucoma survey
will be held at Clinton in the
C.N.I.B. Ontario Mobile Eye
Care Unit. The brief, painless
test is available free of
charge to • the people of this
community. •
'Glaucoma is a 'serious eye
condition in which ,the'•
pressure of the eye is in-
creased. It is caused 'by ab-
normal pressure in the eye,
which slowly damages the
optic nerve, and -retina." -
"In the early stages of
glaucoma, there n-xay be few•
or no symptoms but there are.
warning signfs in that you
may . note that: spectacles,
even new ones, do not seem to
help; you have increasing
difficulty seeing in the dark;
side -vision is diminished in
one or both eyes."
".There is rarely ;pain in-
volved and often the gradual
loss of sight is not noted at the
outset."
"Victimsof glaucoma may
eventually notice blurred
eyesight, rings around lights
and loss of- side vision. The
initial loss cannot be regained
but it is possible to prevent
further damage, If glaucoma
is neglected, vision is
progressively reduced and
the person becomes blind."
"However, if detected
early, chronic glaucoma can
usually ` be effectively ' con-'
trolled by the simple use of
drops. In the later stages,
surgical procedures are used
to assist natural drainage
within the eye."
The survey— is a special
