Vanastra Day Care Centre
For first-time visitors to a
Day Care Centre, it may
seem that the• children are
just playing and not learning
anything. But there are many
.goals in early childhood
education. These goals are
centered around the child's
mental development,.
physical dev'elopment,
emotional development,
social development and
creativity. These areas are
not independent from one
another. They are in-
terrelated and a deficiency in
one can create- inadequacies
in the others. The basic goals
-are that each child live
a happy childhood, reach Ills
potential • and become a
happy, fully functioning
adult.
There area 10 main goals
that teachers of . young
children in day care centres
wish to accomplish. These
help a child to reach his
potential with better un-
derstanding of himself. The
following outlifies these goals.
The child needs. to grow in
independence. He begins to
think of himself a•s an in-
dependent, ' capable in-
dividual. This goal is always
in the teacher" mind as she
plans the program, equip-
ment, - • materials, and
guidance for children. A
teacher remembers this goal development is assisted
as she decides whether or not .,,,,through careful support and
and how much to help a given guidance.
child with his boots or zipper.,
The objective is to help the
child learn to make decisions
and choices. She is respon-
sible for helping each child
reach a level of independence
appropriate for him.
The •child needs to learn to
give _and share as well as
teceive affection. From a
typical pattern of self-
centered affection, the child
will grow in his ability to give
and share affection ,with
-others his age and with adults
other than in his family. The
teacher helps him to feel
secure and lobi ' in his riew
environment. For a child
whose home background has
not fostered feelings of love
and security, the teacher
makes special plans for
working with the child and
the parents, in hopes of
ch-anging some of the
negative aspects of the home
setting.
The child needs to learn to
,get along with others. \As the
child moves out of the social
unit of the family into the
social unit of the school, the
teacher wants . his ex-
periences to be happy. She
helps him learn techniques of
interaction that will bring
him positive responses from Kingsbridge - Two floor, 3
others. bedroom home on Highway 21.
The child needs -to develop Almost an 'acre of land. Only
self-control. The teacher • $19,500.
thinks Of discipline as a skill.
to be developed over time and
one for which there are few.
absolutes. She works towards
the child becoming self
f disciplined, self guided, or
self directed. She -wants him
things about'life
ay Care Centres more
than sitting seryice
to learn certain behavior
responses and the reasons for
them. She explains how
appropriate responses
provide protection for his as
well as for the safety, and well
being of .others. Asa child
gain , understanding he
develops ,a sound basis for
appropriate behavior. Fear of
an authoritarian figure does
not provide an adequate basis
for developing self control.
Experience in making
judgements and decisions is
provided in order that the
child will become confident
that he can make decisions
when the teacher isn't
nearby.
The child needs, to learn the
appropriate sex role. ,The
teacher helps the child to play
his appropriate sex role
through the many ex-
periences she offers him. She
also wants each child to gain
appreciation for the role of
the opposite sex, both in the
present and in the future.
The child needs to begin
understanding his body. The
teacher fosters . un-
derstandings about feeding,
caring for, and appreciating
the body. ,
The child needs to learn
many large and small motor
skills. A program is designed
by the teacher to challenge
the child's small and large
muscles. Motor skill
The child needs to begin to
understand and control his
physical world. `'I'he teacher
develops the child's in-
telligence by encouraging
curiosity, thinking,
reasoning, and the gathering

Every effort is made to help

provide a background of
experiences and attitudes
that will make living and
learning more meaftingful.
The child needs , to learn
new words and how to use
words in his social and in-
tellectual activity. Every
opportunity is used by "the
teacher to foster the child's
use of the language and his

Encouragement is provided

As the child makes his

pectatio s, the teacher
provides protection away

portant fo there to be a
positive very happy ex-
perience. School should be so
personally exciting and
meaningful that fuel is added
to the child's drive to learn.
In this way, the mechanics
r
of learning, reading and
-writing, will seem worth the
effort in the next phase of
schooling. Unavoidably, the
child forms an opinion of
school from his early
educational experiences.
Teachers strive to help the

want him to be positively
attracted to school, teachers,
