The Exeter South Huron
Panthers won the Huron -
Perth Conference junior
football cllan pionshIp
Saturday by defeating the
GDCI Vikings, 22-6,
The game, played in per-
fect football weather, at ••-
Stratford's National Stadium
was the first loss suffered by
the junior Vikings this
season.
The Vikings went into the
game with a 6-0 won -lost
record in regular play and an
over-all record of eight wins
and one tie for the season.
That string of nine un-
defeated games included a 22-
6 victory over the Panthers
ilk
here in the regular season.
However, it just was not in
the cards for the„Vikings to
repeat as Huron -Perth.
Chapmpions this year.
As Viking coach Phil
Bugler expressed it, "They
won as a team all year, and
they l,st it as a team
Saturday." '
The Vikings never, did get
untracked in .the cham-
pionship game while the
Panthers came up with- a
strong performance. The
Panthers mixed a variety of
inside running and accurate
passing -to move the ball
effectively , while their
defence stopped the Viking
ground attack, which had
carried them through ,their
undefeated season.
Late in the game the
V ikings went to the pass, and
except for a couple' of
"almost -completions", when
receivers failed to hang on,
might have,found themselves
back in the game.
The Panthers led 12-0 at
halftime on touchdown runs
by Paul Pooley and Jeff
O'Brien.
Brad Cann's 25 yard run
gave the Panthers an 18-0
lead before Tom O'Keefe
scored the Vikings only
touchdown on a one yard run.
Rob Skinrier added the last
Panthers touchdown circ - a
pass tram Perry Pooley and
Paul Van Gerwen ran for a
two point conversion to
cornp,lete the scoring late in
rhe fourth quarter,
Although they ob\ i++i51y
were disappointed at tailing
to win the championship
game after such a fine
season, coaches Bugler and
Bill Garrow and the junior
Vikings must know they can
be proud of their efforts this
° Niwa
season. •
They provided a fine
example of teamwork and'
dedication and , gave GDCI
football fans a lot to cheer
.about.
•
The GDCI cheerleaders didn't have too much to cheer about kept spirits up throughout the game. Goderich lost in the
