The Goderich Signal-Star, 1975-11-13, Page 81 PAGE 4A--GODERICH SIGNAL STAR THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1975 ..trut. Brigadoon.............. ... ,. 4444... s•great! Goderich musicals BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER An estimated 2,000 persons saw „Brigadoon last Thur- sday, 'Friday and Saturday evening at Goderich District Collegiate Institute, Ern . willing to wager that most of those who attended enjoyed • the first ,musical production at the local high school much more than they thought they would. There are so many plaudits to hand out it is difficult to know where to begin. Where to start? First on•the, priority list has to be the GDCI pit band ., augmented by some hard- working Goderich residents, udder the direction of Al Mulling For one who has 'heard' the GDCI band grow from its earlyT. beginnings with Charles Kalbfleisch until now,, I can only —say how absolutely thrilled I was with the group's performance. GDeF teacher Al Mullin said his band was ready to do a musical. He wasn't mistaken: The students and their 'adult assistants did a , tremendous job to make the evening enjoyable and truly memorable. Credit must be extended to every musician, Director Mullin andn'yone else who helped with the band's effort. The delightful story of Brigadoon unfolded easily and convincingly before the audiences. Thi is un- doubtedly due to the fine basic dramatic training which has been available to GDCI students for the past few years. Much of that credit, of course, must go to Warren Robinson of the GDCI staff who is respected by his students as an able writer, director and friend. This year Mr. Robinson is assisted by his wife Eleanor who is also on staff at GDCI and who has beep involved in musical and dramatic efforts around the community for several years. The entire cast of Brigadoon deserves com- mendation for a -'unified presentation of a, difficult musical. Most actors and actresses " appeared to be enjoying their roles; all were giving 100 per cent at all times. There were some stars. The award for the most natural talent and ease on the' stage goes to Rob Bundy. This, young man was great, simply great, in, the role or Jeff Douglas who incidentally, didn't sing. a note. The audience was treated to good voice projection and .nearly faultless diction from Bundy. He was at home in all situations,- especially comedy, and seemed to have a real awareness of his ability to communicate with the audience. Bundy was in control throughout the 21/2 hour production and was indeed, a bright light in' the success of the play. 'The most sincerity and the greatest all -out -effort was shown by Marianne Frayne) who played Fiona. Miss Frayne had the most difficult and most demanding' role in the production. She has a sweet, clear voice which made songs like Waitin' for My Dearie, The, Heather on the Hill and Al -most Like >?;a>`:;i?°, fifiY•+,':itia>y;;ti:,.+.t.<,•2<,i}#kR?Sr'Y}:i • 4444 }...:lxFl.•...+. n::4ti::.:}r:S:aS:.:.'.:{`a'v.A::;•.. .{. •. n..d ........ 100% POLYPROPOLENE 'LOW PROFILE SHAG CARPETING "Dress up any bare floor in your home with 100% polypropolene, rubber backed, slow profile, shag carpeting, ata bargain prig. Aside from her musical talent, Miss Frayne was a warm performer who as in tune-' with the audience and the cast throughout the play. Her gentle portrayal of Fiona was a joy to see. She made Fiona's love for'• Tommy Albright (Rob McEwen) real and totally believable. Miss Frayne was excellent 'both dramatically and musically and that's quite an ac- complishment for a high school actress. The absolutely • best numbers in the' show were done expertly and incredibly professionally by Wanda Lin'ner.'As the flirtatous Meg w'ho had an eye fpr Jeff Douglas (Rob Bundy), she was the show -stopper in The Love of My Life and My Mother's Weddin' Day. Wanda has a good voice, but more than this she's so comfortable while singing and acting that one would think she'd been born on the stage. Her songs , were dif- ficult but she handled them so well with just the right eye, hand and hip motions - that she was able to make her audience relax and enjoy the whole number as it was meant to be done. She managed , a total knitting together of music anddrama, and drew the thunderous applause of her audience as a' reward. Wanda gets the award for the' most professionalism on stage. - Honorable mentions must be accorded to three young Men ' in the cast, Rob McEwen, EarlSalter and Jed D eJong. Rob McEwen as the male lead appeared uncomfortable, in a heavy musical role, but he made every effort to stay with the performance and to reach the high. notes to the best of his ability. As Tommy Albright who woes and wins the lovely Fiona MacLaren (Marianne•Frayne), McEwen was called upon to sing several solo parts and duet numbers with Miss Frayne. Incidentally Miss Frayne brought visible relief to McEwen when she joined him WIFE SAVERS Wash house and car windows with up and down strokes on one side and side to side strokes on the'other, If streaks are left, you can tell where to wipe. +++ Never buy a plant until 'you understand the conditions it .needs to survive. Salter always brings a measure of self-assurance to. the GDCI performances and in Brigadoon, he showed audiences again how ver- satile and Zalented he is on stage. Jed DeJong was cast perfectly as Harry ' Beaton, 'the jealoussuitorwho lost the shy and sweet Jean MacLaren .to Charlie Dalrymple, DeJong, • ,a valuable Sr. Viking 'football player who has had ex- perience on the stage at GDCI in previous productions, gave a solid performance as the angry' --Harry who vows to leave Brigadoon and thereby destroy the village along with all its people. He ends up dead, however, and is buried in a solemn affair presided over by the townsfolk.. The , befit production numbers in the show were Down on MacConnachy Square with the entire chorus on stage; Jeanie's Packin' Up with the girls chorus in a delightful presentation; and the Sword Dance in which .Kim Brady and -Heather Brander showed ' their Highland Dancing ability to the tune of Piper • Glen ,MacGregor. Those things which add so much to a show - sets, lighting and costumes ` - were adequately done as usual.
