TRICK OR TREAT!
Ghosts and goblins and a host of
youngsters under various guises filtered
through the streets of Goderich Friday
night collecting treats and participating
in various activities offered in town as
the true kindred spirit of Hallowe'en
prevailed.
It undoubtedly came as a mild and
pleasant shock to Goderich that
Hallowe'en was a pleasurable ex-
perience for children categorized by age
and not spirit or mentality. But ,this
Hallowe'en was a night of 4nv'rlvement
and participation of many people of all
age groups., '

A program at the arena offered free
skating as well as food and refreshments
and the best costumes were judged and
awarded cash prizes. At the Huron
Historic Gaol youngsters participated in
variousHallowe'en games such as apple
bobbing. Despite cool te'm'peratures the
children enjoyed an outdoor movie and
refreshments.

It sure is harder than it looks. Trying to take a bite of a
suspended apple without Curing your hands sounds simple
enough but the many children who- attempted at the gaol
Friday night found it most difficult. For small mouths it
was a tough task andmany abandonedThe rules of the game
and used their hands.'(staff photo)
Many youngsters turned out to the Huron Historic Gaol for
evbiting of fun that included gam6s, spooks, an outdoor
movie and refreshments. Here- two young ladies try

Goderich recreation department and
service dubs; approximately 500 people
of hith school age *turned out to the
Lighthouse concert held at GDCI. The
Lions and Kinsmen Clubs not only lent
monetary support but also provided
manpower at the high school.
For, the Goderich Police Department it
was a rather serene Hallowe'en and the
nights duty was not unlike that of any
other weekend night. There were only
two reports of disturbances and mem-
bers of the department " laid some
charges under the Liquor Control Act.
Goderich Police $ Chief P. D. King

more parents appeared to be involved,
However Chief King was also quick to
credit the young people.
"We . must give • credit to _, the kids
themselves," he said. "We concentrated
our manpo.wer on The Square.and there
were lots of areas that weren't covered
and they didn't do anything although
they could havehad the opportunity.
Chief King also believes that the
image of the Goderich Police Depart-,
rraent has changed adding that the
number of constables and special con-
stables patrolling The Square area
certainly discouraged anyorie who had
visions of congregating there. Aside
from special constables, the department
was aided by approximately 20 other
citizens as well as the work done by the
service clubs.
"The response from the citizens and
service clubs was excellent and we can
get back .to what Hallowe'en is all
about," he said. "The parents also co-
operated and now it is important to
continue such activities throughout the
year, '
Chief King was also happy with the use
of the special constables and will, con-
sider employing the services of such
men for other special functions in the
town. Chief King said it was good in-
volvement for.: the men to experience
police...opg'ra-tion.s and - also ' helped
establish good relations with the
department. He Was even optimistic that
it,could be a forerunner of an auxiliary
police program..
Trick or treat, in Goderich will how not
have to imply the horrendous
connotations it once did. Lt took time and
some work and really the' only difference
this year was that young people had
somewhere to go.
