Last minute. heroics help
Junior Vikings to 9-1 win
byTJ a '
On the strength of some last
minute heroics, the GDCI
junior Vikings edged the
Stratford Northwestern
Huskies, 9-7, last Thursday,
preserving „their unbeaten
record in Huron -Perth Con-
ference action.
The Vikings, now with three
wins and no losses, were' Gown
7-0 to the Huskies' at half :time
as a result of a second>uarter
touchdown by Stratford
fullback Tom Kidd on a 15 yard
'sweep.,
Jim Van Osch put the Vikings
on the scoreboard with a 45
yard single in the third quarter.
With one minute and 27
seconds left in the game the
Huskies, gave up a safety, touch
when they were unable to move
the ball beyond their own 10
yard line against a determined
Viking defence.
With the score 7-3 for the
Huskies, Stratford kicked off
from their own 25 yard line.
The Viking began their last
minute offensive drive from the
55 yard line.
With nine seconds left in the
game, quarterback Jon Barz
called for a pitch -pass play
from Tom O'Keefee to Ben
"Worm" Worsen. Worsell
bobbled the ball, but then
.•pulled it in to give the Vikings
...the touchdown and their 9-7
victory.
The Vikings had a tough time
overcoming a stubborn Huskie
defence, „ but were strong

it our best shot. Well, we didn't
and they did,; so Grand Bend is ,
now the proud holder of the
Cup. I'm not bemoaning the
fact that we lost it: otily the
way that we lost it.
Within the first few minutes
of play, you could sense that the
game was not going to be in our
favour. Grand Bend ,was
aggressive, powerful, fast and
most importantly, they had the
' 'DESIRE". •
United was caught out of
position constantly, flubbed
passes and definitely didn't
challenge for that ball. I
couldn't understand it•theri and
I don't now; Goderich is so
darned talented, why the heck
can't they play consistently??
In my humble (very; very
humble it is!) opinion, there
were only two men out on that
field for the full 90 minutes:
Clare Sager who played above
and beyond anyone's normal
endurance and Alex Varga who
played daringly and super-'
defensively in goal.
During the first half, Grand
Bend whammed in three goals

stunned and unhappy. y-, Well
with the second 45 minutes, we
all. hoped, and prayed (yes, we
prayed) that the team would

"heavies" on 'em!
No way ! ! ! Our confused and
befuddled playing only served
to further Grand Bend's. pur-
pose and they slipped in two
more goals. With 5-0 looming
drearily ,over our heads, United
finally managed to start
playing, if not good soccer at
least passable and making" an
opportunity for, us,, Brian Apron
slammed in a goal and we
began to perform in earnest.
Minutes later, Tom Phipps
scored our second and last goal
