The Goderich Signal-Star, 1975-10-02, Page 27TOW 1'^ New Horizons..... (continued from page 5) general repairs are planned. New benches are on order. When it is alt completed next spring, and the point applied, the Club will be a credit to Goderich. Fred expressed the thanks of the member's to the 12 men who have worked so faithfully on the proJects. They are the works committee, Fred Richardson, Earl Allison, Larne Webb, George" Allison, Os Falkiner, Harold Knisley, Allan McTaggert, Frank •McIlwain, Harold Mon- tgomery, Fred Price, Ted White and Lloyd Young; ^ Ted White reported on membership particularly. By accepting the grants the Club obligated itself to involve as many retired people as possible, and others, in, lawn bowling. To accomplish this active membership and coaching committees' were set up and afternoon bowling en- couraged. Free use of bowls and -free membership were offered to new bowlers regardless of age. This has -resulted in grater use of the greens and 2.Q potential new -members for 1976. This could meana fifty percent increase in membership in one year. Inter -club bowling with Mitchell was commenced this year. Hopes are high for in- volvement with other clubs.' Silver dollar awards for those bowlers who used the greens the greatest number of times were presented to Lorna Vincent, Lloyd ' Young, Margaret Allison, Milton, Rayner, Stella Crawford and Mariogan. a Lee Ryan and Mike Mallough brought honour to the Club in the _Provincial and Summer Games championship com- petitions .this year in London. They wqn gold medals in the Suinmer(Games. Appreciation was' expressed to the ladies foci their support, to Lorne Webb, Earl Allison and Fred Richardson for ex- cellent greens and to all who*' helped make 1975 a year of progress. The dinner committee comprising Harold Knisley, Lorna Vincent 'and Lorne Matthews afranged lively entertainment by way of •pantomime singing, Edna Overholt, Os Falkiner -•':and May Richardson; a quiz show,. Ann Sprung and Frank Walkom; and "turnip and apple" lawn bowling, followed by games tr::loseone to Grand Bend; blank St. Thomas Howdy, Ma'am's and Misters! Got two games for you this week;, one a loss, the other a fantastic, terrific, overwhelming win! ! (Notice that enthusiasm??! ! ) It beats me how United can be so superior for one game and the next time look like a bunch of rookies.(no offense, Iain!) That's how the match against Grand Bend two weeks ago appeared to the onlooker. Granted, the weather was incredibly crummy ..: rainy, cold and windy; -but United just couldn't cut it and that's the long and short, of it! Grand Bend isn't the "people's. choice" for classy- soccer or popularity, but they dig in and never let up and for pure steamroller tactics ybu can't stop them. The first half ,was a toughie but it seemed_ promising because we were awarded a penalty kick -and "Big John" Gottschalk landed an easy goal in the net. But Grand Bend scored two goals -on us and we were left feeling at a disad- vantage. The second period of play proved to be not one ,whit - easier 'in terms of chances •for scoring as the Forwards left the mid -field wide open and the opposition took fair advantage of this situation and scored their third and final goal of the gatne. ,. Not rnueh covering was seen on United's part and too much parrying with the ball was evidenced 'and , not nearly enough unity and solidarity between the lines; both forward and defensive. Grand Bend took full opportunity on each mishap and dilemma befalling Goderich and they literally walked away with the game, 3- 1. For United, this was definitely an "off" day but they, rallied their talents and determination for the, following week's game against St. Thomas. Ijt was everything and more that you expect from a team the',calibre -of Goderich United. We walked on the field and the air was full of promise and tense expectancy. And it was marvelous to watch our guys in action back in their familiar. and comfortable . niche. They were tuned in, turned on and totally in command of the field. They initiated each play' and •carried theni"'through smoothly and effectively. St. Thomas was not to be taken lightly; they fought to retain .their ground, but it was hopeless in the face of United's dogged desire. The first 45 minutes 'saw plenty of maneuvering and fast -paced plays. United was the aggressor from start to finish. .Harold Refflinghaus ended the suspense of this half with a beaut of a goal and we were on our way ! Not toornany ;minutes -were left for this half howeiver and we were up 1-0 when the whistle halted the play. . We entered the second half with confidence and persistant determination and it paid off. Only minutes into this period "the Big H" once again zapped a ball into the opposition's net with the authority of a goal - minded man! The cheering had barely died down,. when a penalty shot was given to our, team and Dave "the Dude" Graf was chosen for this task and he gave us goal no. 3 in his own inimitable style! Shortly after this•"fair accomplie", ole Harold whipped another ball into the goal for a hat -trick and point no. 4 for Goderich, We were fairly zipping, zapping and zonking,'em?!.! St. Thomas' sturdy men in centre field were no match for our defense line. They settled any ° , and all problems .in, double- quick time. United was "foxy" (a good adjective, mais oui?). and cool-headed, ' • They handled any action St. Thomas• had to give and controlled the situation and the ball, superbly. They left the Forwards free of flak and harrassrnent, thus enabling them to dispense:'w.it i :` the goal -scoring under the best possible conditions. Their singlemindedness was self- evident when, Dave 'again barrelled in anpther "wowie" goal and proved that the turf was most assuredly ours! Very few minutes were left to be played out when Harold gained firm control of the ball and totalled up point no. 6 for a fantastic finish of 6-0.
