rescued when his house caved • in on him after a gas explosion, trapping him beneath the rubble. Firemen doused
the blaze pulled the child free, and applied aid tohi
him; today,
the tittle e boy is alive andwell

During this period the

fire fighters are taught the

Geoffrey
Our Fire Fighters
Sole: Survivor
People aren't the • only ,
ones who can have close
calls with fire. The sole
survivor of a three -alarm
"blaze that ripped through a
British Columbia school one
night -early this year was a
rabbit' named Geoffrey.
Geoffrey . lived by hud•
dlirig behind a metal cabinet
and breathing fresh air
,from ., a vent.• The other
animals kept" by the school
died in the•firb.
The morning after fire-
men "had put out the blaze,
a tearful young pupil named
John appeared at the scene
and. asked firemen t help
'him search for Geoffrey.
One of the rabbit's favour-
ite hiding places had been
behind the metal cabinet, sv
firemen looked' there first.
There they found him, shiv•
ering and coughing, but un-
harmed. The boy bundled
the lucky Geoffrey in his
coat and took him home,
where he still lives with
John and his family,
for the faint 'of heart, and
temperature recorders assist
in pointing out errors in fire
extinguishing procedures.
Many an imaginary per-
son has been rescued from
a , four-and'a-half storey
concrete "fire tower. Here, ,
ladder training exercises for
hazardous high rise fires are
carried out. Various types
of concrete pits for instruc
' tion in fighting fiaminfable
liquid fires, a sprinkler test
building,, for demonstrating
the effect of sprinklers on'
different types of fires, and
an electrical transformer
vault are also used in the
training program.
True to life situations are
simulated and the', most
modern- fire fighting tech-
niques demonstrated • and
practiced. It's this happy
combination of the practi-
cal side together, with ad-
vanced theory and knowl-
edge that makes the course
so valuable. It is a very full
packed 15 weeks of, hard •
work but the light-hearted
- fire fighters, like all other -
students, find time for fun
•and shenanigans.
Ort graduation students
receive a diploma in "Fire
Protection Technology" and
the information learned• at
