The Maitland Conservation
Foundation received its Char ter
at a special meeting September
24 in Howick Community

Guest speaker for' the oc-
casion was Irwin Lbbsinger,
past chairman of the Saugeen

dation. The - charter was
presented by „Wm. Charlton,
regional directQ. for the
Ministry of Natural Resources,
Environmentally significant
areas are • important to the
future. Swamps which act as
natural,, reseryoirs, source
areas for streams and rivers,
forested areaia and habitat for
wildlife, and valley land for
recreation are all disappearing
at a frightening Sate due to
increased urban and
developmental pressures.
"1f we dcin't realize this
destruction of our resources,
now, and practise proper
management for the future,
these areas are going to be lost
for -all time", says Rob, Keip,
Public Relations and Infor,

municipalities, based on the
land area contained within the
managed watershed. The
balance or the funds for con-
-servation programs is provided
by the Provincial Governrnent,
Because so many con-
servation projects are
necessary across the proCiffice,
funds from the Provincial
coffer are not always available:
The Majtland ;Authority in
particular, is responsible for an
area with a low population
• density, and so municipal funds --
are also very limited compared
to the scope of the problems
that must be dealt with. The
result, is that greatly needed
projects must be neglected.
