Students working during the
summer are generally not of
the selective breed, working at
mundane jobs with the simple
goal of furthering their ex-
perte ces and education: For
five Goderich area people their
employment through a
provincial government
program has been more than a
summer job. It has been an
experience.
But the 'experience extends
itself beyondNmundane chores.
It was an experience of a dif-

Carol Hunter, district in-
formation officer for
Experience '75, explained that
in previous years, students had
worked with retarded children •
through government funded
projects and due to the success
of the project it was expanded
to psychiatric care and in, some
cases, may reinforce career
goals.
The five students„ had no
knowledge of the. program bat
sirhply applied for jobs on their
own. Maria andal y are
working in the nursing division,
Kim works in food services,
'Geoff handles custodian"duties
and Pat is responsible for the
upkeep and maintenance of
• some of the recreational
facilities such as the golf course
diamond.
However, they 'all realized,
although some spoke ern-
barrassingly of their jobs and
the menial tasks the name .
implied, that every job was
important, The importance is
that all workers are exposed to
the patients who are seeking a
friendly smile and an ' un-
derstanding ' ear, which the
young students claim is the
most important aspect of the
. job. Labor assumes secondary
importance.
Maria, Sally and,Kim will all
be entering nursing_in the fall
and view their summer ern-.
ployment as valuable career
experience. Maria and Sally
are employed with the nursing
staff and , view their main
functions as entertaining

although many did not expect

it.
But the attitudes of these five
young students have also
changed. Although most of
S 1 them did not expect patient
contact • their interaction with
them was rewarding for their
own conscience. They have
seen that" all jobs are of im-
portance. Everyone must be a
listener, show• some un-
derstanding and not push

problems aside.
;r. » All the sttidents admitted that
they approached the job with
'some apprehension, an
uneasiness which they
'„suggested need not exist but
does from those who have not
experienced.
"I thought I would have to put
on some sort of masquerade or
extend myself to these people,"
Pat said. "But -I found'I didn't
have to put myself„ out in any
way that I could be completely
natural with tjrgm, and joke
around," ` "
He also expressed the sen-

saying the .job was good for
individual initiative. The jobs
for the students as well as other
employees are not cut and
