Stomp Notes
Variety of mounts
available on market
BY ROWSHRIER
' One problem confronting
collectors today more than ever
is how to'mount their collection.
There .are over a dozen dif-
ferent companies manufac-
turing mounts, including
Dennisogi, Harris (Crystal
Mounts), Marlate, Scott,
Harco, Prytan, ' Lighthouse
(Hawid), Gibbons, as well as
several hinge manufacturers.
With so many to choose from,
it's hard to know what is right
for your needs. Hopefully I can
,clarify things somewhat.
One common misconception
among young collectors sub-
scribing to Harris approvals is
that the Crystal Mount: is a
great way to mount mint
stamps. It is far front the best;
and barely borders on
adequate. It is no cheaper than
other superior mounts, it does a
bad job of holding the stamp in
place, its gumming is often
faulty,. and if it sticks, it ;is ,
nearly impossible to remove it
without damaging the page.
.C'rystal mounts are ,not good
mounts, and this is the opinion
' • of many,
Marlat'e mounts are
'relatively new to the market,
• •• but they .are undoubtedly the
most handsome,. As all good

open on three sides, so it, can be
cut at the top, Mounting,
storage" and classification of

busines, and they do it very
well,
Very little is known around
here about the Harco mount• It
is available in blue only and is
similar to the Lighthouse. It is a
very inexpensive mount. The
three mounts mentioned above
are available either in strips or
cut to size.
The PM or Protective Mount
is a popular mount around here
although it is rather expensive.
It is a self-adhesive piece of
black stock covered ,on three
sides by a folded plastic sheet,
Thetop is folded over and the
adhesive removed when the
stamp is in and ready to be
mounted. It lasts well,
although it cannot be removed
without damaging the page,
and sometimes there may not''
be 'enough adhesive on the
back. It is a good mount, but
definitely not worth the money..
The above mounts can all -be
obtained by, mail order. Check
the accessories advertisements
in Linn's stamp news. In all
cases samples are available
from the company. Your best
bet is to order from accessory

The brands mentioned here
are, -but a sampling of,the many

obtained before you decide
which mount is best for your
needs.

Ont.Beef. Calf program
The Ontario Government has
announced the introduction of
the Ontario Beef Calf Income
Stabilization Program as the
first such program to' which
reference was made in the
budget speech last April. •
The voluntary program is
based on the insurance prin-
ciple whereby a stabilization
fund will be 'established from`
the producer and 'Government
premium's with the Ontario "
government adding $2,00 to the .
fund for each $1.00 of .pr'oducer
premiums.
The program provides for the
establishment of an ANNUAL
SUPPORT LEVEL for weaned
calves and if the average price ,
of weaned calves for that year
falls below the support level' a
.payment will -be calculated"
back to a per cow basis and
paid from the fund.
As mentioned above, `-the
program follows the insurance
principle and consequently is
not designed ,to cover the "'full
costs . of production. The sup-
-port level is established on the
basis of covering 100 percent of
the cash operating costs in a
cow -calf operation and a
partial percentage of the costs
associated with labour,
management and return on
investment. -
Ontario cow -calf producers
who opt' to enrol in the program
must loin for a minimum
period of five years. There is no
maximum on ,the number 'of
cows which may be enrolled in
the program by a producer and
a producer may join the
program during the enrolment
period in any year.
Over a five- year period

payment into and out of the -
stabilization fund 'should
balance. The program assumes
that'a 450 ib. weaned calf will'
be -sold from 85 percent of the
cow herd and ,payment made,
regardless "of, whether the
enrolled producer keeps or sells
his calves..
Cows enrolled' with the
Canadian ..D'airy Commission
(and hence shipping fluid or
industrial milk)' ate not eligible
for the program.
Program Details:
1. Per cow premium to the
producer - $5.00;
2. For, 19.75 a support level of
50c per lb. for weaned calves is'
established;
3. ' Weaned . calf prices for
'Northern Ontario stocker sales
and the Ontario Public Stock
'Yards during • September,'
October arid November will be
used to establish the calf price;
4, Producers who wish to enrol
must do .so by August' 31 each
year;
5. For 1975, because of ' the
limited time available, no
premium will be paid by
producers who enrol but rather
the premium will be deducted
from the gross per cow,
payment declared;
6 In the event of calf prices
falling below the 'support level
during September, Octoberland
November, of, each year, a
payment will be declared and
'made.,,,,frorn the fund in
December'of that year;'.' '
"7. Application .forms and in-
formation on the program will
.be available ' l'h County and '
district offices of the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food,
example for 1975:
Support level - 50c; Assume
that the average price . 'for
weaned calves, this fall will be
40c per lb. Price deficiency - l0c
per Ib. 1Qc per lb x 450 lbs -
$45,00 per calf; $45.00 x .85 -
$38.25 per cow.
For 1975' on the basis of this
example the net.payment to the
producer from the fund would
be made of•$38.25 minus $5.00 -
$ 25 per cow enrolled in the,
p gra n,1,.

size. They consist of two sheets
of a plastic on a black paper
background. The stamp is
placed between the plastic. It
has a very fibrous surface, so it
grips the perforations and
keepsthe stamp secure. s,
It does have its drawbacks.
There is not yet a way to adhere
it to the album , page, without
having wrinkles on the paper.
But it ,is one of the most
economical mounts sold,
making it popular with people
with large.collections.
Scott mounts are :Scott's
answer to the mount problem.
They are a' regular premium -
priced mount, arch as the
Lighthouse. They . are com-
posed of a specially -formulated
plastic compound made so that
it doesn't ° discolor the stamp
after prolonged use, and so that
it grips the fibres ion the .•per-
forations.
It is available only with an
indigo blue background, . and
,the top and bottom are closed,
so "the mount .cannot be ad-
justed for height. The'opening
is the back of the mount, so,
once mounted, the stamp 'can
only be removed through the
.sides: They keep well, and they
are peelable from most heavy
bonded stock pages.
- Another type of mount
siniilar to the ,Scott, and a big
favorite among collectors is the
Hawid made by Lighthouse.
This is one . of the most ex-
pensive mounts . made, but its
advantages far outweigh its
price, 'It is. made of a higher
quality plastic than" the Scott,
grips better, comes • in four
different colours plus tran-
sparent, and unlike Scott, it is
NPRSE SETTLEMENT IN
NEWFOUNDLAND FOUND
FOUND GTIG ROUGH
It has been known for some
years that,a small settlement of
Norsemen or Vikings was
establishes, around the .' year
1000 at the northeastern tip of'
Newfoundland. There have
been suggestions that the'
cli mate and `vegetation at that
time may have been more
attractive for, settlement. This
notion has now been dispelled
by a team of geologists of the,
Geological Survey of Canada,
Energy, Mines and Resource .
They took soil, peat, ashes anal
other samples, and, ' after
analyzing them, concluded that
there had been no significant
changes In climate in the last
1,000 years, and that the•
vegetation' was mostly scrub.
