The Ontario Government's
- ¢ new xperien9e - '78 ssl-rimer'
employment program has
employed more than 7,500
young people across the
province at a cosi, of $10 million.
The jobs that were made
available through the program
were in addition to the nearly
10,000 regular summer jobs
that were offered through other
government ministries,
commissions and agencies.
The Ontario Experience '75
Program is comprised of 27
component programs which in
past years ,were identifiable
through the names ,SWEEP,
SWORD, CRISP and SPEIL.
Because of the size and number
of programs they% were grouped
under Experience '75. All of the
programs operate through
various government ministries
and in many cases are run in
cooperation with established
community ` agencies such as
recreation committees, school
boards, conservation
authorities, museums; art
galleries and hospitals.
The programs aim was to
ensure that local priorities and
concerns were met since the
community groups would
provide the administration for
control and accountability of
the program. y.
Ontario Experieriee '0
provided the province's, young
people ° with valuable ,.work
experience, since the'programs'
were designed to complement
their educational interests and
training and. perhaps 'assist
them in making future
decisions on career selections.
One of the more 'functional
aims of the program was to
enable communities' to carry
out projects, of importance to
that community.. that otherwise
° may have been left untouched
due to lack of finds. The jobs
areas covered a wide range of
fields with students working in
culture, environment, law
enforcement, psychiatric
hospitals and tourism.
For many ;students the
money earned through the
program will enable them t6
continue their schooling in a
post secondary institution. The
program designed almost 50
percent.: of the jobs for high
school students who f oil,nd .it
difficult to. compete in the
summer • job market with
university and community
college students who complete.
their studies by the beginnning
of May. . The wages paid to
students working under the
programAranged from $2.50 per
hour to °$3.60 for senior
supervisory personnel.
Experience '75' and ifs
component programs have -also
employed many students in the
Huron County area in nine
different job categories. The
students are,.employed, in a,
variety of jobs in the county
ranging from, cultural to• 'law
'enforcement and en-
vironmental.
The Huron County Pioneer
Museum' has employed three
students for the summer under
program seven of the,Ministry
of 'Culture and Recreation. The
students were trained in basic
museum - cataloguing
procedures. ,The 'students are
cataloguing the museum's
collection and thereby assisting
in the establishment of an in-
ventory . of _the Province's
historical objects and artifacts.
Two university students,
' Laura Peterson and Elizabeth
Ross, worked for the Huron
County Public Library
providing a book service for
vacationers. in the "area. The
program offered 155 young
people employment with any
orie of the 14 regional library
systems.
Paul Parsons and Mike
Donnell -sof Goderich worked in
a program. offered by the
Ministry of • Culture and
Recreation'' which provided
youth sailing instruction at the
Goderich 'Harbor. The sailing
instruction was given in co-
operation with the Goderich
Sailing club.
Si students .from Huron
County were employed by a
program under the Ministry of.
Education which involved
updating the • history of Huron
County from 1900 to `1975, The
project was 'done with the
cooperation of the Huron
County .School Board and the
Huron County Council.
Five area students were
employed by the ` Goderich
Psychiatric Hospital for the
summer in a progranperated
by the Ontario Ministry of
* k, ealth.
